CHEWIE, THE BORDER COLLIE/MINI AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD LIFESAVER (PART 4)

IMG_3314-2

Chewie knows when I am unhappy.

She gets very upset if I am crying, so I try not to cry in front of her.

If she feels that I am sad or upset, she won’t leave my side.

The most joyous moment I can think of, was the first time I brought her home.

I realized that with Chewie, I am not alone; that we are going to go places together.

She acts as a service dog.”

“Chewie helped me through a tough time.

I was depressed and she helped me get out of the house whether I wanted to or not.

Walking a dog 3 or 4 times a day gives me clarity.  It makes me feel like whatever is troubling me is going to be okay.

The routine gives me something to do, and my focus is on something other than myself.”

“I went on the internet and searched and found a breeder in New Jersey.

I waited a few months for Chewie to be born, and then another few months to take him home.

We both felt like

like we belonged together from the moment I brought her home.”

“I was lonely and felt that I didn’t have any life in me.

My psychiatrist told me to get a dog.

That was 7 years ago.

While I was on vacation I saw a Border Collie that I liked a lot and I thought, this is the kind of dog I want.”

KIWI, THE CHIPOO – CHIHUAHUA/POODLE MIX (SHE SAID, PART 3)

“It was a foster to adopt process and I had a week to decide if I wanted to keep her, but

I was convinced from the first minute, when she hopped on my lap, that she would be mine.

I had a few roommates, so they had to get to know her and approve.

It took a little convincing with some of my roommates, but by the week’s end, everyone approved.

M boyfriend was visiting, and he had to approve, too.”

PRINCESS, THE PIT BULL, LABRADOR RETRIEVER MIX THERAPY DOG (PART 3)

“I got Princess and started training her for my mother.

In December of 2013, after having Princess only four days, my mother passed away.

I kept Princess and moved back east in April or May of 2014.

It was really hard at first when I moved to NYC.

My landlord said I couldn’t keep her, so I had to get a medical note saying that she had become my service dog to deal with the trauma from my mother’s passing.

We were separated for two years during this process.”

“He loves little kids and likes to lick their hands and faces.

I think he genuinely wants to make them smile.

He is not a food or treat driven dog.

Getting love and affection is motivation for Murphy.”

“Murphy helps me to relax.

I found a lump in my breast and felt instantly afraid, without any instant resolution.

I had two weeks of living in fear, but Murphy helped take my mind off of what was happening with me.

Murphy also makes me laugh.

He is still a puppy so he’s very clumsy and friendly.”

“He really got me out of my head.

He initiated walks outside and it was great to have something that depended on me, so I couldn’t give in to my feelings of isolation.

He is insistent on staying in the moment, so I can’t linger on anything too long.”

“Two things have happened since I’ve had Murphy.

My father is much older and suffers from a neurological disorder and he got very sick.

It was very scary.

When I would cry, Murphy would come right up to me and snuggle.”
