“I wasn’t really looking for another dog.

I knew my husband wouldn’t be thrilled, but I saw Milo at an adoption event at our pet store.  He was the exact same size as Mr. Bert, but with a very different personality.

We call Mr. Bert the mean mother because he’s always correcting other dogs.

We call Milo the permanent puppy because he is always getting into trouble.”

Samantha, the Pit Bull Terrier/Shitzu mix rescue, who was a very sick puppy (part 3)

“I didn’t have my wallet or any identification because we hadn’t planned on adopting a dog, yet.

My boyfriend agreed to adopt her and he used is identification and paid for her, but we agreed that she would be my responsibility.

At first she was so sick that people couldn’t understand why we chose her.

My father said she was so ugly because she was skin and bones and coughing constantly.

Once she recovered, he too fell in love with her.”

“I wanted a dog for years.

I used to cry because I wanted a dog so bad.

I was living in Croton-On-Hudson in a not dog friendly neighborhood and my boyfriend just moved to Manhattan.

Once we got an apartment and settled in together, it became possible for us to get a dog.

We knew we would get a dog down the road.”

Stella, the Peaceful Puppy Terrier/Hound Rescue From Palmetto Paws That Bonded A Couple (She Said, Part 1)

“I grew up in a home where rescuing animals was a regular occurrence.

My Family always rescued older animals that were about to be euthanized.

I’ve always wanted my own dog.

I have a man in my life and we are very committed to one another.

We were able to financially and emotionally support a dog.

I knew I wanted a rescue, because that’s what my family did and it was important to me.”

Tina, the Beagle/Italian Greyhound/Terrier mix rescue from Social Tees (she said, part 3)

“We had her for three weeks and then adopted her ourselves.

We fell in love with her and started calling her, our Tina.

As a foster care giver, you are required to take them to adoption events.

I took her and she met all these potential adopters.

I cried my eyes out.

I called my husband during lunch and asked if we could adopt her, ourselves.”

“When they post new dogs, a foster care giver clicks on the link to come down and pick up the dog, if the care giver is available.

That is exactly what we did with Tina.

Six dogs had just arrived from the Dominican Republic that needed fostering.

We were in the first six responders, and went downtown that night to foster Tina.”

Dodger, the mini-schnauzer, cairn terrier mix rescue from the NYCACC (center for animal care and control, part 5)

“Dodger loves to go hiking.

I feel comfortable letting him off leash on a trail.

He always keeps me in his eye’s view and never wanders far.

It’s almost like he’s on an invisible leash.

I had him thru my 20’s and he’s taught me a sense of responsibility.

He’s helped me get through some hard times in my life and he’s a great stress reducer.

He’s lived on both coasts with me and is always there for me.

Dodger is my family.

“I didn’t mind those things because i was ready for anything from a shelter dog.

it was love at first sight, when I met Dodger.

I am sure he was a little shy, but he was very sweet.

All he needed was a little TLC.

He’s so sensitive and has been amazing during any romantic breakups I’ve gone through.

I went through a breakup in January and he was always right next to my leg.”

“I’ve had Dodger over 10 years.

I had just finished school and I wanted a best friend.

My family always had pets.

I felt like there was that whole in my life that needed to be filled.

I tried several shelters in the NYC area and the last one I went to was the CACC.”

Bailey, the Staffordshire Terrier, Chow Chow, Boxer and Labrador Retriever Rescue Mix (she said, part 2)

“My husband and I applied right away.

They checked out our references pretty quickly and then we went to meet her.

It was definitely love at first sight.

We didn’t want to go home without her.”
