PENNY, THE DACHSHUND MIX FROM RESCUE DOGS ROCK (PART 5, SHE SAID)

“No matter what kind of day we are having, at the end of the day, our pack will go to sleep in our den.

We originally thought we would have a no dog on the furniture policy, but Penny obliterated that quickly.

Now we all snuggle together on the bed.

Her favorite spot is between our faces on the bed.

I like to say, she is the statement, we are the parentheses.

We are hoping to get her in the Good Dog Foundation.

They train dogs and handlers to go into hospitals and other care facilities to bring companionship and joy to people having a hard time.

Penny is great with kids, so we would like to focus on having her become a service dog for pediatrics.”

“Penny has given our family an extra sweetness, like adding a jewel to a necklace.

She added a new dimension to our relationship and family unit.

We are her only two people–we made a promise and it’s a responsibility we love.

She came to us with some health problems, digestive issues; she couldn’t keep any food down, and we worried about her.

She had to have an endoscopy and it took several months to resolve.

Thankfully, she is fine.”

“Rescue Dogs Rock, saw a video of her posted on another rescue organization site based out of North Carolina, called A Shelter Friend, and pulled her to bring her to New York City.

Grateful Doggies is a shuttle service that brings rescue dogs via plane and car to their perspective homes and rescue groups for free.

So many caring groups were responsible for saving Penny from being put down in a kill shelter.”

“We called that photo Honey Ryder, because it reminded us of the image of the James bond character, Honey Ryder, coming out of the water in her white bikini, and the photo of Penny was her coming out of the water, with the sun behind her and her fur was glistening.

She was so cute.

She wasn’t all doxie, but we said, that’s okay, she’s so cute we have to meet this rescue.

The organization that posted her on Pet finder was called Rescue Dogs Rock.

We hadn’t heard of them, but soon found out they do great work.”

“Our friend, Julia had two dachshunds, Henry and Joshua and we just fell in love with them.

So, I thought we wanted a dachshund.

My boyfriend and I love dogs and felt like it was time to get one.

We both had time consuming jobs, but started working from home, so it seemed like the right time.

My partner started googling Dachshund rescue on Pet Finder and Penny popped up on the screen.

She is a Doxie mix and her photo was the cutest dog we’d ever seen.”

BABKA, THE JACK RUSSELL/RAT TERRIER/CHIHUAHUA RESCUE FROM BIDE-A-WEE (PART 4)

“After taking her to the vet because she had a skin issue, namely, mange, we were told we needed to put her on a diet and give her a lot of exercise to slim her down.

We walked her five miles a day.

It worked and she lost a lot of weight after only two months.

She also had a growth spurt and that took care of the rest of the unwanted fat.”

“My husband always wanted a cat and I am allergic, so we agreed to get a dog.

I was not an animal person, before Babka.

We had just started looking and went to Bide-A-Wee Rescue.

Initially, we wanted a one year old dog.

We thought an older dog, (older than a puppy), would be easier for first time dog owners.

The other thing is I was afraid of a nipping puppy.”

“I was bitten when I was a child and was a little nervous around dogs in general.

The counselors at Bide-a-Wee recommended that we meet Babka, (called Pretty Girl, at the time), even though she was just six months old.

Her tail wagged the entire time we spent together and she leapt from my lap to my husband’s lap.

His cats used to do that, so he took this as a sign that she was meant to be ours.”

“We filled out the paperwork and took her home.

We were absolutely terrified that first day.

For me, the responsibility seemed overwhelming.

My husband was scared as well.

The first night we got her, she slipped out of her harness and ran down the sidewalk.

She was fat at the time so he caught up with her quickly, but had to turn her on her side to stop her from running again.”

“She would start and go wild and continue for a good ten to fifteen minutes in that crazy chomping mode.

This was before she had all her shots and she couldn’t go to the dog park or socialize with other dogs, yet.

I walk her more now because I am out of school.

I knew having a dog was going to be a lot of work, responsibility and fun.

It has been exciting because I see a new side to Silka every day.

I am watching her shed her puppy ways and grow into an adult dog.

It’s hard to put into words why I love her so much, but I feel very connected to her.”
