Nikki and Winston, the Pit Bull and Shiba-Enu Rescues (She Said, Part 2)

“My parents got a dog the year before I left for college but I had always wanted one.  I’d been obsessed with dogs since I was tiny.

Getting a dog was always on my Christmas list.

Nikki is a rescue and kind of a nervous dog.

My boyfriend, and I are passionate about adopting/rescuing dogs as opposed to shopping at a pet store.”

“I had Nikki 2 years and she was queen bee of the house and then the dynamic of the house changed.

I met my girlfriend and Nikki fell in love with her, then I fell in love with her.

And then we got Winston, a Sheba-Enu and the family unit became complete (for now).

Winston was an impulse love at first sight dog.  And then he turned out to be a huge pain in the ass.”

“I went on Petfinder (which is like online dating).

She had a great profile photo and first person story.  So, we went on a first date, which was a walk in Central Park.

She was standoffish because she had a really tough start.

She was found pregnant, roaming the streets of the Bronx and taken to a kill shelter.

They gave her an abortion and she was going to be put down that week.

A foster family rescued her, but couldn’t keep her, so she bounced around 3 or 4 homes before I got her.

Her last foster home was with a pit bull activist who helped her socialize and become more at ease.”

“I always had a dog growing up and then once I got to college I kept telling my friends I was going to get a dog.

6 years went by and I still didn’t have a dog.

I landed my first good paying job and my best friend said, why don’t you have a dog.

2 weeks later I got Nikki.

I knew I wanted to adopt and I knew I wanted a pit bull because there are so many of them that need a home.”

Samantha, the Pit Bull Terrier/Shitzu mix rescue, who was a very sick puppy (part 2)

“I wanted to go to an animal shelter,  just to pet the dogs.

We went to the CACC (Center for animal Care and Control), where we saw Samantha and fell in love.

She was extremely underweight.

She was half her weight now and she had a bad case of Bordatella, but she was also so sweet and innocent.

She just needed medical attention and love.

When we took her for a walk she was eager to please us, as she

was completely obedient and already housebroken.

I knew after the walk that I wanted her.”

Gracie, the Chihuahua and Boscoe, the Pit Bull Terrier, Rescues (part 1)

“I rescued my big guy Boscoe, from a shelter in Texas outside Dallas, called It’s Raining Cats and Dogs.

It was a rescue group based out of Cabela’s, a sporting goods store.

I had seen a white Pit with blue eyes the year before.

I remembered that dog and inquired with the group to see if they still had the white Pit with blue eyes.

The head of the rescue group said they had two white pits with blue eyes, so my husband and I went down and looked at them.”

Rooney, the Miniature Pinscher, Pit Bull, Hound Mix Rescue, that filled a void (she said, part 4)

“She engaged with us right away.

She got into our laps and wanted to play.

We put in an application for her then and there.

She had a lot of applications.

We checked in with the people at Animal Haven to the point of being annoying, but our persistence paid off.

We’ve had her since August.”
