“The best thing is having them both together.

It’s rewarding watching them complement each other.  Nikki has made Winston more affectionate and Winston has made Nikki more playful.”

The worst thing is that we travel a lot and there is nothing worse than walking into an empty house.”

“The first year of his life was difficult.

He was sick with pneumonia.  He was indoors for 5 months, so that stunted our ability to socialize him for a while.

At first Nikki didn’t know what to do with puppy Winston.  She looked at me as if to say, what did you do?

The first year, Nikki was intent on being an only child.

Eventually Winston wore her down and now they are the best of friends.”

“I had Nikki 2 years and she was queen bee of the house and then the dynamic of the house changed.

I met my girlfriend and Nikki fell in love with her, then I fell in love with her.

And then we got Winston, a Sheba-Enu and the family unit became complete (for now).

Winston was an impulse love at first sight dog.  And then he turned out to be a huge pain in the ass.”

“I went on Petfinder (which is like online dating).

She had a great profile photo and first person story.  So, we went on a first date, which was a walk in Central Park.

She was standoffish because she had a really tough start.

She was found pregnant, roaming the streets of the Bronx and taken to a kill shelter.

They gave her an abortion and she was going to be put down that week.

A foster family rescued her, but couldn’t keep her, so she bounced around 3 or 4 homes before I got her.

Her last foster home was with a pit bull activist who helped her socialize and become more at ease.”

“Jack has taught me a lot about taking care of another being.

On stressful days, he’s what I look forward to when coming home.

A partner has to love him, in addition to loving me.

He’s part of the  package.”

“I found his picture through a rescue group in Tennessee called Moonshine Dog Rescue.

If you committed to buying one of their dogs, they promised transporting the dog up east.

Once I committed to adopting Jack, another rescue group called Alpha dog Transport brought him from the scout, it a tractor trailer full of dogs from different rescue groups to a designated are off route 80 in New Jersey.”

“My boyfriend is not happy about that but he acknowledges that if anything were to happen with us as a couple, Samantha is my dog.

She is the biggest blessing.

She is unconditionally loving and brings me joy everyday.”

“Samantha is so full of love that she zoomed around the apartment when I came home from school and then sat on my lap for most of the evening.

Technically, Samantha is my boyfriend’s dog as well as mine, but I am protective of her and have made it known to him that she is really mine.

I am the one who struggled with her while he was away while I was in school 12 hours a day.”

“Since having Sam, the most difficult and yet comforting time, was when my boyfriend went to rehab.

I was on my own as a new dog mom and all the responsibility was mine.

As a full time student, I hired a dog walker (even though I work part time as a dog walker).

I needed help while I was at school.

At the same time, she was a great comfort to come home to.”

“Samantha is gentle, playful and obedient.

Her only problematic quality is that she doesn’t eat.

I brought a bag filled with different brands of dog food we tried with no success and our veterinarian told us we had exhausted most of our options but that we should try Stella & Chewy’s or Fresh Pet.

We had success with Fresh Pet, and top it off with the dehydrated Stella & Chewy’s.”
