Leroy, the Maltipoo (Maltese/Poodle Mix), (part 2)

“Once I felt sure that they were good breeders, I sent them an email and she told us that she would let us know when she had a puppy that would meet our needs.

We were looking for a specific size and temperament.

We decided that we wanted to train our future dog to be a therapy dog.

We want to volunteer with kids and wanted the right dog for the job.”

Kiwi, the Chipoo (chihuahua/poodle) rescue mix, (he said, part 4)

IMG_1998“I’ve been working with Kiwi to build trust  for four and a half months and it seems to be paying off, though she still tries to claim my spot on the bed.

We are currently working on that.

I will occasionally have to wear an oven mitt so her bite doesn’t hurt.

When she bites, I send her off to her crate with a treat.

Since she is a rescue dog, we don’t know if she had some traumatic experience or not.”

Willow, the rottweiler, boxer, beagle, chow chow, terrier mix rescue (part 5)

IMG_2226

“I have someone to come home to every day and my life feels like it’s in place.

First I got a dog and then I got a serious boyfriend right after.

It’s been smooth sailing since having Willow.

Dogs are a lot of work, time and commitment, but there is a great payoff–

unconditional love.”

Willow, the rottweiler, boxer, beagle, chow chow, terrier mix rescue (part 1)

“I thought it was time to get a dog.

The ability to travel with and include them on outdoor excursions made me want a dog over a cat.

I used to foster dogs for Social Tees the rescue group, but ended up getting Willow at the Sullivan County SPCA.

I had a ski rental last year nearby and found this SPCA online.”

Zimmy, short for Zimmerman, the German Shepherd mix rescue named after Bob Dylan (part 3)

IMG_1767

“He had crazy looking ears and a great soul.

I got him on June 1st, and I call that summer, my summer of Zimmy, because I was off from work and spent every day with him.

We went to the beach, hiked mountains or had some sort of daily adventure.

When I got him, he was about a year old.

He has been the love of my life for the past nine years.”

Isabel, One of two sister Lab/Whippet rescue Dogs from Tennessee (part 1, she said)

IMG_0924

“My boyfriend and I were looking for a puppy for my best friend for her birthday.   She has a boxer that’s 8 and wanted a companion for her dog as well as herself (for when her dog passes).

She is a maternal person and enjoys caring for others.

She left it up to me to pick out her dog.  She wanted it to be a surprise.

We definitely wanted to get her a rescue.

We found a boxer lab mix and filled out the forms.

A few days before the puppy was supposed to be shipped from Tennessee, the man from the rescue group told me, the puppy had parvo, (a deadly virus) and didn’t survive.

He had a few puppies that weren’t right for her lifestyle, so we told him to hold on to our deposit and we would check back with him.”

Penny, the Dachshund Mix From Rescue Dogs Rock (part 5, she said)

“No matter what kind of day we are having, at the end of the day, our pack will go to sleep in our den.

We originally thought we would have a no dog on the furniture policy, but Penny obliterated that quickly.

Now we all snuggle together on the bed.

Her favorite spot is between our faces on the bed.

I like to say, she is the statement, we are the parentheses.

We are hoping to get her in the Good Dog Foundation.

They train dogs and handlers to go into hospitals and other care facilities to bring companionship and joy to people having a hard time.

Penny is great with kids, so we would like to focus on having her become a service dog for pediatrics.”

Smoky, the Shepherd Mix Rescue Found Wandering in the Smoky Mountains (part 3)

“When we brought him back he was still sick with infection from the prong collar that had been removed from his neck.

We had two other dogs at home back in Florida and weren’t sure if he would join the pack or they would welcome him–but they all got along well, right away.

Smoky took to our black lab and they were best friends for eight years until she died.

After that, Smoky bonded even more with our Malamute Shepherd mix who lived another year and a half.”

Ike, the rescue Boxer, Chow, Collie, Labrador, Hound mix (part 3, she said)

FullSizeRender-225

“Caring for Ike gets me out of the house and meeting new people.

I can be a bit of an introvert, and Ike has gotten me out of my shell, so to speak.

He’s also a great companion.

We go on hikes in Montauk on a weekly basis.

We both get a little depressed on Monday, when it’s time to come back to the city.”

Ferris, the rescue Parvo survivor from the mountains of Canada (part 3)

fullsizerender-58

“I think Ferris has changed how we look at animals.

Instead of us thinking that he should do one thing our way, we’ve learned to adapt and compromise.

When he’s on the leash and an aggressive dog comes by, I step between them to stop anything before it happens.

I don’t say, “bad dog,” I simply diffuse the situation.

I know what works for both of us.

We average walking 6-10 miles of walking a day in the city.

I didn’t want him to suffer from our move to the city.

I wanted to maintain his quality of life.”
