PENNY, THE DACHSHUND MIX FROM RESCUE DOGS ROCK (PART 2, SHE SAID)

IMG_6841

“We called that photo Honey Ryder, because it reminded us of the image of the James bond character, Honey Ryder, coming out of the water in her white bikini, and the photo of Penny was her coming out of the water, with the sun behind her and her fur was glistening.

She was so cute.

She wasn’t all doxie, but we said, that’s okay, she’s so cute we have to meet this rescue.

The organization that posted her on Pet finder was called Rescue Dogs Rock.

We hadn’t heard of them, but soon found out they do great work.”

BABKA, THE JACK RUSSELL/RAT TERRIER/CHIHUAHUA RESCUE FROM BIDE-A-WEE (PART 1)

“My husband always wanted a cat and I am allergic, so we agreed to get a dog.

I was not an animal person, before Babka.

We had just started looking and went to Bide-A-Wee Rescue.

Initially, we wanted a one year old dog.

We thought an older dog, (older than a puppy), would be easier for first time dog owners.

The other thing is I was afraid of a nipping puppy.”

SILKA, THE BLACK LAB MIX RESCUE FROM THE WEST CHESTER HUMANE SOCIETY (DAUGHTER SAID, PART 4)

“She would start and go wild and continue for a good ten to fifteen minutes in that crazy chomping mode.

This was before she had all her shots and she couldn’t go to the dog park or socialize with other dogs, yet.

I walk her more now because I am out of school.

I knew having a dog was going to be a lot of work, responsibility and fun.

It has been exciting because I see a new side to Silka every day.

I am watching her shed her puppy ways and grow into an adult dog.

It’s hard to put into words why I love her so much, but I feel very connected to her.”

”I’ve always wanted a dog and finally my parents said, we are going to get a dog.

I was 15 at the time and lived at home.

That was two years ago.

My family adopted her from the Westchester Humane Society.

We were looking at dogs on their website and a photo of Silka popped up.

The angle of the photo made her look slender and very unique.”

SMOKY, THE GERMAN SHEPHERD MIX RESCUE, FOUND WANDERING THE SMOKY MOUNTAINS (PART 5)

FullSizeRender-307

“I feel that any time I’ve had struggles in my life, my dogs have all been there for me.

They give unconditional love.

If you’re having a bad day, they don’t care.

As long as I love on Smoky, the love is always there.

A dog’s love is always there.”

Smoky took to our black lab and they were best friends for eight years until she died.

After that, Smoky bonded even more with our Malamute Shepherd mix who lived another year and a half.

It’s hard to say definitively the best or worst time since having Smoky, because he has always been there for me.”

CHARLIE MEATBALL, THE RHODESIAN RIDGEBACK MIX RESCUE (SHE SAID, PART 5)

“My ex-boyfriend turned to me and asked, do you like this dog?

I answered, do you, guy who doesn’t want a dog, like this dog?!

He said, I love this dog.

And that was the beginning of Charlie.

We took him home,  I looked at him and called him meatball, but my ex said, he didn’t like dogs named after food.

I liked the name Charlie.

I called him Charlie and he responded, so it stuck.”

“A woman had driven by him day after day and noticed that he was tied up, his body was fly bitten, emaciated and deteriorating.

One day she knocked on the owners’ door and asked if she could take him home with her.

They told her, take him.

He was transported to Denver, where we lived at the time, and saw him at the Petco adoption event.”

DIEGO, AS IN DON DIEGO DE LA VEGA, AKA ZORRO (HE SAID PART 2)

FullSizeRender-42

“As the end was getting closer, I gave in and agreed to pick up Diego.

I changed my mind because my sister found a home for her other 2 dogs, pugs.  My wife really wanted Diego, so I agreed to it.

I went up to Rochester before she went into hospice to say goodbye and I rented a car, got a crate and wanted to get out of there so quickly, that I got a speeding ticket.

Meanwhile, Diego didn’t know what was going on and started hyperventilating in the back.  I would stop along the way to walk him, but nothing helped.”

“It was my wife’s idea to get Diego.

My sister was very ill and before she went into hospice care, she asked us to adopt him.

My wife had fallen in love with him when we visited previously, so she wanted to adopt him when my sister asked.

At first I told my sister, no.

It was an expense we couldn’t afford and we had just lost our last dog, Winnie.”
