Preston, the Failed Show Dog Rescue, And Scarlet, the Black Labrador Mix, Rescue (Part 3)

“We went online looking for a Vizsla to rescue and came across a site that had a Vizsla mix.

That dog was adopted, but we saw a photograph of Scarlet and we decided to rescue her from a kill shelter in North Carolina.

We didn’t want to bring Scarlet home right away so we introduced her to Preston in a neutral zone in Brooklyn and within 15 minutes they were playing together.

They have been best friends ever since.”

Zimmy, short for Zimmerman, the German Shepherd mix rescue named after Bob Dylan (part 2)

“Every time I went in, I visited the dogs, as I had dogs on the brain.

In fact, I had already picked out a name.

I was writing a book at the time and one of the chapters was on Bob Dylan, so I knew I wanted to call the dog, Zimmerman.

The third time there, I passed two huge German Shepherds, and in the same cage was a small Shepherd mix cowering in the corner.

I told the worker that I wanted to see that dog, and within two minutes, he was my dog.”

“I was living in Los Angeles and bought a beautiful old gem of a house that had a doggy door leading to a backyard.

As soon as I saw the doggy door I started thinking it was time to get a dog.

Before I could act on it, a stray cat had a litter of eight kittens in my backyard.

I called the local rescue shelter and they told me people don’t adopt feral kittens, so I should trap them, get them neutered and re-release them into the neighborhood.

As a result, I was going to the shelter once a week, and looking at dogs up for adoption.”

Isabel, One of two sister Lab/Whippet rescue Dogs from Tennessee (part 1, she said)

“My boyfriend and I were looking for a puppy for my best friend for her birthday.   She has a boxer that’s 8 and wanted a companion for her dog as well as herself (for when her dog passes).

She is a maternal person and enjoys caring for others.

She left it up to me to pick out her dog.  She wanted it to be a surprise.

We definitely wanted to get her a rescue.

We found a boxer lab mix and filled out the forms.

A few days before the puppy was supposed to be shipped from Tennessee, the man from the rescue group told me, the puppy had parvo, (a deadly virus) and didn’t survive.

He had a few puppies that weren’t right for her lifestyle, so we told him to hold on to our deposit and we would check back with him.”

“I walk her more now because I am out of school.

I knew having a dog was going to be a lot of work, responsibility and fun.

It has been exciting because I see a new side to Silka every day.

I am watching her shed her puppy ways and grow into an adult dog.

It’s hard to put into words why I love her so much, but I feel very connected to her.”

“We adopted Silka and brought her home that day.

That was three months ago.

The only hard part since getting Silka has been her teething phase, which she is still going through.

She used to bite us and was hard for her to stop.

She would start and go wild and continue for a good ten to fifteen minutes in that crazy chomping mode.

This was before she had all her shots and she couldn’t go to he dog park or socialize with other dogs, yet.”

Charlie, the lab mix with a great smile (part 1)

“I grew up with dogs.

I was single and living alone so I put off getting a dog.

When I got engaged and bought a house I decided it was time to get a dog.

I own my own business so I could take a dog to work.  I knew I wouldn’t be leaving him at home all day by himself because I had flexibility.

I knew I wanted a Labrador Retriever or a Lab mix.

There is a rescue agency based in Rhode Island that rescues dogs from down south and places them up and down the northeast coast.

I saw a photo of Charlie on their site.  He was brought up to a foster family in Rhode Island from Alabama.

I decided to surprise my wife.”
