Allie, the rescue beagle mix (part 2)

“We met her, fell in love and took her home.

All the other dogs were full of energy and she was just sitting in the crate acting mellow.

We wanted a mellow dog.

She was very timid so we started working on socializing her right away.

We took her to a Monday night puppy play group at Unleashed and we discovered that she was the mediator of the group– a policeman, if you will.

She barked when there was either too much excitement or not enough (to get other dogs to play).

Having a dog has changed the pace of my life.

Allie makes me stop and smell the roses, literally, instead of getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of NYC.

She also keeps us on a schedule for walking and playtime.”

Batman, the fated dog (part 1)

“I had a dog who got run over by a car and I was devastated about it.

I just thought the best way to get over that loss was to get another dog.

I looked at an online rescue agency called Mustard Sandwich and I saw Batman’s photo.

I wanted to get a dog and name him Batman.

Batman and his brothers were listed online and they were all named after cities except for Batman, who was already called “Batman.”

I thought; this is my fate.

I also thought, this is MY Batman.

I applied for him online.

I was moving from New York to Florida and picked him up on the drive down.

When I first saw him, he was only 2 pounds, his ears were all floppy and he was the cutest thing.”

Milo & Mr. Humbert, the delinquents (part 1)

“We had large dogs and when they started dying of old age we decided to downsize the dogs.

I travel a lot and missed my dogs, so I decided to get dogs that I could take on a plane.

Mr. Bert came first.

My daughter, sister and I were on a road trip passing thru Portland, Oregon and my daughter had to visit a rescue shelter for small dogs a block away from where we were staying.

Our big dog  had died a few months before .

We thought we’d just visit, but one thing led to another and Mr. Bert came home with us.

He was originally called Tank, but we were listening to Lolita on our road trip so we called him Mr. Humbert (Bert for short).”

Scout, the friendly dog

“We adopted another dog who we had for six months but he was an older and insecure dog. He was too protective of me with both strangers and members of my family, so we had to give him back.

We have a friend who works in a shelter in Connecticut. She let us know that she had a litter of puppies that would be up for adoption.

So I went up with two of my three boys. Scout was the shyest, but kept jumping in our laps.  We wanted to make sure we didn’t have another aggressive dog, and Scout certainly was not that.

My older boys may go away to school soon and we wanted to make sure they had a relationship with him, so this was a good time to get a dog.

Peeing on the rug is the worst thing he’s done.

Puppy issues.

We have loved watching him become settled and bonding with our family.”
