Kiwi, the Chihapoo – Chihuahua/Poodle Mix (she said, part 4)

“Since having Kiwi, we moved to New York, from Palo Alto and she was a continuity of companionship throughout the move.

We weren’t as close to a dog park in California, so New York is great for her because she loves the dog park.

Having Kiwi has given me another creature to care for and my maternal instincts have kicked in.

The three of us make a nice little family.”

Teller, Ivy, and Zoe, the Family of Bearded Collies (part 2)

“I said to my husband, it’s time.

So, we got Teller.

That was four years ago.

All of my kids moved out of the house and Teller was getting lonely and we played with the idea of getting another dog.

We called breeders to see who was having a litter.

Luckily, Teller’s breeder was having a litter and it was going to be her last, so we went to Buffalo (where she was located), right away.

We were surrounded by puppies.

We couldn’t decide between Ivy and Zoe, we got both of them.”

Susu, the French Bulldog that provided comfort and stability (part 1)

“I think I’ve always been attracted to Frenchies.

I had just made a move to Las Vegas.

I was single and I planned to be there for a while, so I thought it was time to get the dog that I always wanted.

I got Susu on the spur of the moment.

Looking back, I would love to have gone through a breeder or adopted a rescue, but I was young and naive, so I got Susu at a pet store.

I had just gone through a tough breakup and my sister and I walked into a pet store just to look around, hoping it would cheer me up.”

Smoky, the German Shepherd Mix Rescue Found Wandering the Smoky Mountains (part 4)

“It’s hard to say definitively the best or worst time since having Smoky, because he has always been there for me.

I feel that any time I’ve had struggles in my life, my dogs have all been there for me.

They give unconditional love.

If you’re having a bad day, they don’t care.

As long as I love on Smoky, the love is always there.

A dog’s love is always there.”

“When we brought him back he was still sick with infection from the prong collar that had been removed from his neck.

We had two other dogs at home back in Florida and weren’t sure if he would join the pack or they would welcome him–but they all got along well, right away.

Smoky took to our black lab and they were best friends for eight years until she died.

After that, Smoky bonded even more with our Malamute Shepherd mix who lived another year and a half.”

Barcley, the Irish Terrier that keeps life light and appreciates the little things (part 4)

“On  a boring winter day Barclay keeps everything positive.

He keeps things light and entertains us.

I’ll never be without a dog again.

He appreciates the little things.

He appreciates a treat, a trip to the dog park, a road trip, an occasional nap on the bed.

He is a role model for gratitude.”

“I was lucky because someone backed out and I got Barcley.

Since having Barcley, I went through a job change.

I went from having a structured schedule to a more flexible one.

Barcley has been a great distraction.

He gets me out into the neighborhood and helps me connect with people I would never have met before, when I had a rigid work schedule.”

“The matchmaker asked tons of questions.

They are very protective of the breed.

She matched me to a man in Philly and a woman in New Hampshire.

We met the breeder in Philly before the puppies were born.

The mom-to-be was about to have an ultrasound the next day and he found out she was having fewer puppies than he originally thought.

I went on a waiting list.”

“I met a therapy dog at the Meet the Breeds Dog Show at the Javits Center, and she was an Irish Terrier.

She was so lovely and different from other dogs I had seen.

The Irish Terriers have a bit of a different look.

They have a beard, are scruffy, yet elegant and a perfect size.

I started doing a lot of research online.

The breed club has a matchmaker.

She spoke with me on the phone and made a match.”

Silka, the black lab mix rescue from the Westchester Humane Society (daughter said, part 3)

“We adopted Silka and brought her home that day.

That was three months ago.

The only hard part since getting Silka has been her teething phase, which she is still going through.

She used to bite us and was hard for her to stop.

She would start and go wild and continue for a good ten to fifteen minutes in that crazy chomping mode.

This was before she had all her shots and she couldn’t go to he dog park or socialize with other dogs, yet.”
