CHARLIE MEATBALL, THE RIDGEBACK MIX RESCUE, (SHE SAID, PART 1)

FullSizeRender-91

” The first month my ex-boyfriend and I started dating, my fourteen year old black lab, Calvin, died.

He came with me when it was time to euthanize him.

That was definitely a bonding experience.

After 6 months of dating we moved in together and I insisted we get a dog.

He didn’t want a dog, so we put it off for a month.”

Samantha, the Pit Bull Terrier/Shitzu mix rescue, who was a very sick puppy (part 7)

“My boyfriend is not happy about that but he acknowledges that if anything were to happen with us as a couple, Samantha is my dog.

She is the biggest blessing.

She is unconditionally loving and brings me joy everyday.”

Stella, the Peaceful Puppy Hound Rescue From Palmetto Paws That Bonded A Couple (She Said, Part 7)

“Having Stella is something that bonds us together.

As a result of having her, we have more patience with one another and have created a stronger set of communication skills.

Stella has brought out a more nurturing side to my boyfriend and he truly loves her, which in turn adds an element to our relationship.

We spend a lot of time outdoors with Stella, whereas we might have just been indoors, doing our own thing before.

Sometimes when I am watching a beautiful sunset while walking Stella, I think to myself,  if not for her, I might not be seeing this right now.

She has taught us to be more observant of the world around us.”

“We found out her mom was dumped in a High School Football field and they didn’t know how long she had been there.

A good samaritan called the ACC (Animal Control Center) and got her mom to a rescue group, where they realized she was pregnant.

Luckily, her mom gave birth under the care of a veterinarian with the rescue group and she delivered nine healthy puppies.”

Einstein, The Miniature Schnauzer Puppy That’s a Great Comfort to His People (Part 1, He Said)

“My wife and I were a long way from home and just missed that family vibe in the house.

She did a lot of research.

She grew up with Mini-Schnauzers and felt comfortable with them.

She got her first mini-schnauzer when she was seven and decided that was the dog of choice for us.

We bought him in the Netherlands.”

JARVIS, THE GOLDEN DOODLE PUPPY THAT WAS BORN THE DAY WE GOT ENGAGED (PART 2, HE SAID)

IMG_1498-2

“We initially planned to get a dog after getting married, but we decided to get a dog after Balto died.

We were thinking about getting a Bernese Mountain Dog, but we found out that they have a short life expectancy and that they shed.

Then we found out that doodle breeds are great for non-shedding.

My fiancé suggested the golden doodle because of the no-shedding and they are mild mannered in terms of temperament.

We wanted to get a puppy to raise together.”

Teller, Ivy, and Zoe, the Family of Bearded Collies (part 1)

“I’ve had dogs all my life.

When I moved from Argentina to Manhattan I didn’t have the heart to have a large dog, but I promised my seven kids we would get a dog when we moved into a house and had the space and time to care for a dog.

We moved to Riverdale and got a Bearded Collie.  After a few years we got second Beardie.

The first Beardie lived to be eleven and the younger one died at only three, from epilepsy.

I could not get another dog because I felt I would be trying to replace the other two, but every time I walked in the street and saw a Bearded Collie, my heart would jump out.”

Penny, the Dachshund Mix from Rescue Dogs Rock (part 4, he said)

“She was confused at first, but took to her crate right away.

It really helped give her a sense of security–having her own crate.

She had been sharing a crate with a German Shepherd at her foster person’s house.

We started calling her Penny right away and she began responding to her new name after a few weeks.

Over time Penny acclimated to New York City life pretty well.

We trained her to play off leash in Central Park after having her for three months, and at first, it was only for short periods of time.”

“We also spoke with her foster person, who told us that she was originally nervous but that was becoming less so, and she thought she would turn into a great dog– with the right people.

We went home, walked it over for a few weeks, and decided to formalize the adoption process.

She was a good size for an apartment and we liked that.

She was a dachshund mix, and we felt that her young age made her trainable to be a good city dog.

We were excited to have her.”

Tallulah, the Yellow Labrador Retriever/Whippet Rescue (Part 3)

“Once she got into a ball point pen and when I came home there was ink all over my light colored carpet and her face was covered with ink.

Aside from the normal puppy phase, she was a great college dog.

She got lots of attention from people on campus and became a very social dog.

I just graduated from undergraduate school in May and came to NY a month ago for graduate school.

We rented a truck and drove up to New York City for 16 hours.”
