OLIVE, THE FRENCH BULLDOG THAT WANTS TO PLAY 24/7 (PART 3)

“Someone at my dog park in New Jersey, had a Frenchie who I really liked and I reached out to their breeder and she was about to have a litter.

She told me that I needed to reserve a dog, because they bred very conservatively and would be spoken for quickly.

At the time I wanted a male, but when she sent me photos of the litter, I fell in love with Olive’s face and knew she was the puppy for me.”

“I say that it’s like living with a toddler.

She wants to play 24/7.

I started doing research into rescuing a Frenchie but I realized pretty quickly that the ones available to rescue usually had either health or behavioral issues.

I realized that I wasn’t the best owner for that situation.”

“I got Olive because my last dog died and I was still living at home, but was considering moving out on my own.

I was doing research on good apartment dogs and French Bulldogs came up a few times.

I also thought they were very cute.

People said they were quiet and calm.

Olive is the opposite.”

JOJO, THE BELOVED FRENCH BULLDOG, SHARED BY TWO PEOPLE (PART 5)

Jojo is my best buddy.

I take him with me everywhere.

He came with me to the Dr. for my annual physical and when the Dr. tested my knee reflexes with a medical hammer, Jojo started growling at him, thinking I was in danger.

He would protect me at any and all costs.

As a single person, getting outside my own head and taking care of another being fulfills my life.”

“One night Jojo jumped off the bed and his legs gave out from under him.

I knew he was in distress because he was panting heavily and he couldn’t walk.

I rushed him to the Animal Hospital, Blue Pearl, and they operated on his spine the next morning.

It took four to five months for him to heal, and he is as recovered as he will ever be.

He can run and fetch, climb up on rocks, and ride on the bike.

He can’t jump off of anything, play tug of war, and he can’t wrestle.”

“Jojo became more and more of a shared dog, and we consider it joint custody.

Two things changed  everything with Jojo and me.

Hiking and biking.

We started to go on the bus to Harriman State Park and hike all day.

We got there at 10:30 a.m. and left at 5:00 p.m.

I bike everywhere, so I bought a dog carrier that I attached to my bike and we are a team.

We rode to down to the battery along the river and then up to the little red lighthouse at the George Washington Bridge.”

“His owner said, Jojo would come home home after our trip to the dog run and Central Park, and pass out from exhaustion.

Next, we started having sleepovers.

His owner and I decided that I would keep him for several days at a time, which turned into Thursday evening through Monday morning.

I started taking him to the veterinarian, because I had him on the weekend, and his owner and I work during the week, and neither of us have much free time.”

TUCKER, THE FRENCH BULLDOG THAT CHOSE HIS FAMILY (PART 4)

“Our entire lives revolve around Tucker.

It’s like being a parent.

I am excited to see how Tucker reacts when we expand our family and have a child.

I think he will drive the kid crazy.

I also think he will be a great friend and protector.”

“I called him and after much arguing the owner of the Pit Bull finally paid half the bill.

It wasn’t really about the money, but about taking responsibility.

I would never want any dog owner to suffer the way we did.

I don’t know if I can think of a happiest moment, because there are so many.

When Tucker saw snow for the first time he ran around in circles,  buried his nose and  was in ecstasy.

He also loves the beach;  he loves to bury his face in the sand.”

“That was 5 years ago November.

Unfortunately, a very bad thing happened when Tucker was 6 months old.

He had’t been neutered yet, and we were just walking on a Sunday night and he was attacked by an unneutered adult pit bull.

The pit had Tucker’s head in his mouth and he was bitten on his ear and jaw bone.

I rushed him to Blue Pearl (the animal hospital); it was only 1 block away.

We were lucky that the injuries weren’t as severe as they could have been.

A lot of people in the neighborhood  had heard about the incident and one of my neighbors found the owner of the pit and demanded his phone number.”
