L.T, THE RESCUE HOUND, TERRIER AND GOLDEN RETRIEVER MIX (PART 3)

“Before getting L.T. I lost my job after working there for twenty-two years.

L.T. has been my support.

He gets me out and walking every day.

I’ve lost fifteen pounds as well as my depression, since getting L.T.”

Nikki and Winston, The Pit Bull and Sheba-Enu Rescue Dogs (He Said, Part 4)

“The first year of his life was difficult.

He was sick with pneumonia.  He was indoors for 5 months, so that stunted our ability to socialize him for a while.

At first Nikki didn’t know what to do with puppy Winston.  She looked at me as if to say, what did you do?

The first year, Nikki was intent on being an only child.

Eventually Winston wore her down and now they are the best of friends.”

“I had Nikki 2 years and she was queen bee of the house and then the dynamic of the house changed.

I met my girlfriend and Nikki fell in love with her, then I fell in love with her.

And then we got Winston, a Sheba-Enu and the family unit became complete (for now).

Winston was an impulse love at first sight dog.  And then he turned out to be a huge pain in the ass.”

“I went on Petfinder (which is like online dating).

She had a great profile photo and first person story.  So, we went on a first date, which was a walk in Central Park.

She was standoffish because she had a really tough start.

She was found pregnant, roaming the streets of the Bronx and taken to a kill shelter.

They gave her an abortion and she was going to be put down that week.

A foster family rescued her, but couldn’t keep her, so she bounced around 3 or 4 homes before I got her.

Her last foster home was with a pit bull activist who helped her socialize and become more at ease.”

“I always had a dog growing up and then once I got to college I kept telling my friends I was going to get a dog.

6 years went by and I still didn’t have a dog.

I landed my first good paying job and my best friend said, why don’t you have a dog.

2 weeks later I got Nikki.

I knew I wanted to adopt and I knew I wanted a pit bull because there are so many of them that need a home.”

“We rushed him to the Blue Pearl Animal Hospital.

It turned out that he had eaten rat poison.

We got there just in time, because he was hemorrhaging internally.

I thought I was going to lose him because he had bled out too much.

The vets said he had a 50/50 chance of surviving.

I prayed and prayed.

He made it..”

Roxanne, the International Rhodesian Ridgeback Puppy (she said, part 6)

“It’s not so much a particular situation, but rather the process of loving her and sharing her with my boyfriend that has enhanced our lives.

Roxanne has awoken maternal instincts in me that I wasn’t aware I had.

She has shown me the I can be responsible and diligent if something is important enough.

She makes my boyfriend and me feel like a family.

I do a lot of the walking and feeding because I can, but when my boyfriend is home he adores her and they spend a lot of time playing together.

It’s wonderful to watch them.”

“I came to Jersey City at first, which was no problem because it was quiet.

However, two weeks later we moved to Manhattan, which is taking some adjustment- at least on the streets where there are crowds, cars and noise.

I am looking forward to taking her to Central Park when she has adjusted a little more.

I think she will love it.”

“I took her back to Germany with me for three months and we lived in the Black Forest, which is beautiful, calm and surrounded by woods.

It gave us time to bond intensively and she was able to adjust to environmental factors such as cars and people.

Once we came to the city she was okay.

She learned a lot in Germany and attained a great deal of self confidence.”

Samantha, the Pit Bull Terrier/Shitzu mix rescue, who was a very sick puppy (part 1)

“I wanted a dog for years.

I used to cry because I wanted a dog so bad.

I was living in Croton-On-Hudson in a not dog friendly neighborhood and my boyfriend just moved to Manhattan.

Once we got an apartment and settled in together, it became possible for us to get a dog.

We knew we would get a dog down the road.”
