SILKA, THE BLACK LAB MIX RESCUE FROM THE WEST CHESTER HUMANE SOCIETY (DAUGHTER SAID, PART 3)

“We were torn between Silka and one other, but my mother suggested we go with our first instinct and the reason we were there in the first place.

We adopted Silka and brought her home that day.

That was two years ago.

The only hard part since getting Silka has been her teething phase, which she is still going through.

She used to bite us and it was hard for her to stop.”

“We had a picture in our minds of what we wanted our dog to look like and she fit the bill.

It was love at first sight from the photograph.

We drove up to the shelter the next day to meet her.

We were offered a room where people meet and play with potential puppies and dogs to adopt.

When we first met her and her siblings, they all jumped at us.”

“We traveled for 3 weeks and when we came home, I suggested again that we get a puppy.

He made an excuse the first week, but the second week, my sister visited, and she and I both insisted we go to an adoption event.

He kicked and screamed the whole ride there.

It was the first time we argued in front of my sister (who is also my best friend).

We didn’t tell him there were 3 adoption events happening that day.”

CHEWIE, THE BORDER COLLIE/AUSSIE LIFESAVER (PART 2)

“I went on the internet and searched and found a breeder in New Jersey.

I waited a few months for Chewie to be born, and then another few months to take him home.

We both felt like we belonged together from the moment I brought her home.

Chewie helped me through a tough time.

I was depressed and she helped me get out of the house whether I wanted to or not.”

“I was lonely and felt that I didn’t have any life in me.

My psychiatrist told me to get a dog.

That was 7 years ago.

While I was on vacation I saw a Border Collie that I liked a lot and I thought, this is the kind of dog I want.”

IKE, THE RESCUE BOXER, CHOW, COLLIE, LABRADOR, HOUND, MIX (HE SAID, PART 3)

“That was a long time ago, but I didn’t know if I wanted to go through that again.

It was a tremendous loss.

I still look at photos of him and tear up.

I also didn’t know, if Ike would live up to the standards of my last dog.

But, my daughter pulled the card of being an only child, and I caved.”

“I had to come to grips with my reasons for not getting a dog.

Primarily, I thought the city is not a place for a big dog, and I only wanted a big dog.

Also, we travel a lot, I didn’t want to pick up poop, and I just didn’t want another responsibility.

But that was only partially the reason, the other being that I hadn’t gotten over the loss of my last dog.”

Milo and Mr. Bert, the Delinquent Rescues (Part 4)

“We can’t leave anything out on the counter because Milo gets into everything.  He really loves the paper in my purse.

The other day he got my passport and I caught him chewing the edges.

He loves money, too.  I’ve got a $10.00 bill that he chewed a hole in.

He likes anything he can find and chew.

He is also fond of eyeglasses and shoes.  We remind our houseguests to hide their shoes and other personal belongings for their own protection.”

Nikki and Winston, The Pit Bull and Sheba-Enu Rescue Dogs (He Said, Part 5)

“The best thing is having them both together.

It’s rewarding watching them complement each other.  Nikki has made Winston more affectionate and Winston has made Nikki more playful.”

The worst thing is that we travel a lot and there is nothing worse than walking into an empty house.”

“The first year of his life was difficult.

He was sick with pneumonia.  He was indoors for 5 months, so that stunted our ability to socialize him for a while.

At first Nikki didn’t know what to do with puppy Winston.  She looked at me as if to say, what did you do?

The first year, Nikki was intent on being an only child.

Eventually Winston wore her down and now they are the best of friends.”
