Anubis, the Papillon/Chihuahua mix and Dima, the Pomeranian/Husky mix (part 4)

“The litter was running around in open farmland and playing with one another.

I met the litter and spotted him immediately, because he was the only one with different colored eyes.

I got to pick him up, and I loved him right away.

He was less fluffy and looked more wild.

I didn’t see the Pomeranian in him, but I didn’t care.”

Kiwi, the Chipoo – Chihuahua/Poodle Mix (he said, part 3)

“We both saw Kiwi online and we both jumped at the chance to adopt her.

It was love at first sight.

I was only there for a week after Kiwi was adopted and I don’t think she remembered me ¬†after the year.

She greeted me in a friendly manner, but not as though I was part of her pack.

She is protective of my girlfriend, and that includes protecting her from me.”

Olive, the Basset Hound, Staffordshire Terrier, and unknown mix, Rescue Dog (part 3, she said)

“In August of 2015 we filled out an adoption form before we found a dog.

The adoption counselor interviewed us for an hour and was careful to ask questions that would match us with a suitable puppy.

She asked specific questions regarding temperament, breed, color, size and about our personal activities, as well as how much time we were willing to invest in the puppy, and how much time we would be spending at home.

She said there was a litter of puppies coming up from Virginia.”

Willow, the rottweiler, boxer, beagle, chow chow, terrier mix rescue (part 1)

IMG_2206

“I thought it was time to get a dog.

The ability to travel with and include them on outdoor excursions made me want a dog over a cat.

I used to foster dogs for Social Tees the rescue group, but ended up getting Willow at the Sullivan County SPCA.

I had a ski rental last year nearby and found this SPCA online.”

Kai, the Three Legged Maltese/Chinese Crested Mix, Rescue (part 4)

“I just recently retired and having Kai gives me a routine and a schedule.

I still mourn the cat, and realize that Kai is not a substitute.

I used to get maybe 8,000 or 9,000 steps on my Fitbit, but now I get 10,000 by 2 pm.

He runs much faster than I do.

I know this, because he ran away from me twice in Rockaway.”

Goldie, the Lagotto Romagnolo, that was a Surprise Birthday Present (part 1)

“Toby, our last dog, a huge Wheaton Terrier, died about two and a half years ago and it was just time for a new pup.

I did a little research online.

I needed another hypoallergenic dog and I didn’t want to try to replace Toby, so I decided to get a different breed.

I wanted a female this time and a slightly smaller dog.

I called up a Lagotto breeder who I found on the web.”

Zimmy, short for Zimmerman, the German Shepherd mix rescue named after Bob Dylan (part 4)

IMG_1772

“About eight years ago both my sister and veterinarian noticed that Zimmy’s head shape was changing.

Instead of being round it was caved in looking.

We went to a dog neurologist and he was diagnosed with a rare German Shepherd disease, called Muscular Myelitis.

It wears away the muscle mass in the dog’s head.”

“Every time I went in, I visited the dogs, as I had dogs on the brain.

In fact, I had already picked out a name.

I was writing a book at the time and one of the chapters was on Bob Dylan, so I knew I wanted to call the dog, Zimmerman.

The third time there, I passed two huge German Shepherds, and in the same cage was a small Shepherd mix cowering in the corner.

I told the worker that I wanted to see that dog, and within two minutes, he was my dog.”

“I was living in Los Angeles and bought a beautiful old gem of a house that had a doggy door leading to a backyard.

As soon as I saw the doggy door I started thinking it was time to get a dog.

Before I could act on it, a stray cat had a litter of eight kittens in my backyard.

I called the local rescue shelter and they told me people don’t adopt feral kittens, so I should trap them, get them neutered and re-release them into the neighborhood.

As a result, I was going to the shelter once a week, and looking at dogs up for adoption.”

JARVIS, THE GOLDEN DOODLE PUPPY THAT WAS BORN THE DAY WE GOT ENGAGED (PART 5, HE SAID)

IMG_1369

“One of the best times since having Jarvis was when he was a tiny puppy and was so small and carefree.

He had a real innocence.

It took me out of the business of life.

He was a great distraction from the stress and pressures of daily life.

Also, on of the awesome things about Jarvis is that he was boron the day I proposed and my fianc√© said, yes.”
