“We care for him together; he is a shared responsibility.

He adds more flue to our family.

He is also a stand-in, or partner and companion when one of us is traveling.”

“A woman had driven by him day after day and noticed that he was tied up, his body was fly bitten, emaciated and deteriorating.

One day she knocked on the owners’ door and asked if she could take him home with her.

They told her, take him.

He was transported to Denver, where we lived at the time, and saw him at the Petco adoption event.”

“We all got in the car and my sister drove us to the first event, which was the furthest away, but they didn’t have any puppies so I was ready to leave.

My ex saw this dog that he wanted to meet.

He was being walked on a leash so we thought he belonged to someone, but he was indeed up for adoption.

We talked to the people at Petco, where the event was being held to ask about the health history of the dog called, Lyle.

He was really sick and emaciated.

They told us that he was a rescue from Texas.”

“We traveled for 3 weeks and when we came home, I suggested again that we get a puppy.

He made an excuse the first week, but the second week, my sister visited, and she and I both insisted we go to an adoption event.

He kicked and screamed the whole ride there.

It was the first time we argued in front of my sister (who is also my best friend).

We didn’t tell him there were 3 adoption events happening that day.”

” The first month my ex-boyfriend and I started dating, my fourteen year old black lab, Calvin, died.

He came with me when it was time to euthanize him.

That was definitely a bonding experience.

After 6 months of dating we moved in together and I insisted we get a dog.

He didn’t want a dog, so we put it off for a month.”

TWIGGY, THE ITALIAN GREYHOUND/CHIHUAHUA MIX RESCUE (PART 2)

“My partner and I both craned our necks because she was so beautiful.

We assumed that she was one of the patients at the hospital, as opposed to one of the dogs up for adoption.

At the interview I was wearing a rainbow button, because the Supreme Court had just legalized gay marriage the day before.

The interviewer said, I see your button and I am so excited, I’ve been with my partner for 43 years.

We told her we were looking for a short haired, small female.

We thought she would bring out a chihuahua.”

Samantha, the Pit Bull Terrier/Shitzu mix rescue, who was a very sick puppy (part 6)

“Samantha is so full of love that she zoomed around the apartment when I came home from school and then sat on my lap for most of the evening.

Technically, Samantha is my boyfriend’s dog as well as mine, but I am protective of her and have made it known to him that she is really mine.

I am the one who struggled with her while he was away while I was in school 12 hours a day.”

Milo, the Pomsky (Pomeranian/Husky Mix), (part 5, she said)

“initially, having Milo was difficult on our relationship because we had a tough time dividing the responsibilities.

We weren’t sure about who walked him or cleaned up his accidents more, but now being responsible for Milo has ultimately brought us together.

We have learned to work as a team.”

We divided the walks evenly and are on the same page about training him.”

Stella, the Peaceful Puppy Hound Rescue From Palmetto Paws That Bonded A Couple (She Said, Part 7)

“Having Stella is something that bonds us together.

As a result of having her, we have more patience with one another and have created a stronger set of communication skills.

Stella has brought out a more nurturing side to my boyfriend and he truly loves her, which in turn adds an element to our relationship.

We spend a lot of time outdoors with Stella, whereas we might have just been indoors, doing our own thing before.

Sometimes when I am watching a beautiful sunset while walking Stella, I think to myself,  if not for her, I might not be seeing this right now.

She has taught us to be more observant of the world around us.”

“Stella can fix her own leash if it gets tangled.

She knows how to spin on command and she can jump and catch a ball on a fly.

When she was very little and we brought her home, I had just started a new job and was gone half the day.

It took a toll on my relationship with my boyfriend, who had never owned a pet before, and wasn’t sure he wanted a dog, let alone a puppy, but was supporting my decision and desire.

All of a sudden he became Stella’s major care giver and it wasn’t a job he was used to.

I changed some things around in my schedule and took on more responsibility.

Over time, Stella won over boyfriend’s heart.”
