POPPY, THE SMOOTH COATED BORDER COLLIE RESCUE (PART 1)

IMG_8512

“I lost my last dog four days before I got Poppy.

He died at twelve from old age.

I went to Columbia Greene Humane Society in Hudson, New York.

I was hoping to find a border collie mix, and there she was, amongst all the pit bulls up for adoption.

She was just what I was looking for; a female under the age of two years.”

LILY, THE BLACK LABRADOR WHO WAS MEANT TO BE A HUNTING DOG (PART 5)

“It’s everything from the mundaneness of scheduling things, to the whole idea of having something you are responsible for.

I also love how much she gives back to me in regards to companionship and laughs.

Lily has a great sense of humor, and makes me laugh regularly.

She loves to roll around on the ground while seemingly smiling, and likes to steal things like socks, shoes and a loofa sponge.

She never destroys things, she just likes the game of taking them and having us chase her.

Coming home after work is pure joy because she is so happy and we like seeing each other.”

“When I first got Lily, I was going through a divorce and she was a constant source of joy and playfulness, which was wonderful.

She required a lot of attention, which was a great diversion from the divorce.

She was great about getting me a whole new social network and seeing parts of the city I had never been to before having her.”

HARRY AND MILLY, THE PAPILLONS THAT MAKE AN EMPTY NEST MORE BEARABLE (PART 3)

“Harry is shy with people, but more social with dogs and Milly is the opposite.

Milly likes to be the center of attention, so Harry gets less attention than he used to.

It only took a week for Harry to stop guarding his toys when I got Milly.

They bonded with each other in a matter of weeks, though they are each more

bonded to me than each other.

I think it’s not a coincidence that I got these dogs as I became an empty nester.”

“I got my dogs for companionship.

I always had big dogs and this time I wanted an active small dog.

I just wanted something different.

I am a petite person and I didn’t want anything so strong.

I also wanted a dog that could sit on my lap.

I just liked the way Papillon’s look.”

KIWI, THE CHIPOO – CHIHUAHUA/POODLE MIX (SHE SAID, PART 5)

“Since having Kiwi, we moved to New York, from Palo Alto and she provided great companionship throughout the move.

We weren’t as close to a dog park in California, so New York is great for her because she loves the dog park.

Having Kiwi has given me another creature to care for and my maternal instincts have kicked in.

The three of us make a nice little family.”

MURPHY, THE BLUETICK COONHOUND/BORDER COLLIE MIX RESCUE FROM A KILL SHELTER (PART 5)

fullsizerender-134

“Murphy helps me to relax.

I found a lump in my breast and felt instantly afraid, without any instant resolution.

I had two weeks of living in fear, but Murphy helped take my mind off of what was happening with me.

Murphy also makes me laugh.

He is still a puppy so he’s very clumsy and friendly.”

“Two things have happened since I’ve had Murphy.

My father is much older and suffers from a neurological disorder and he got very sick.

It was very scary.

When I would cry, Murphy would come right up to me and snuggle.”

OLIVE, THE FRENCH BULLDOG THAT WANTS TO PLAY 24/7 (PART 2)

IMG_7318

“I say that it’s like living with a toddler.

She wants to play 24/7.

I started doing research into rescuing a Frenchie but I realized pretty quickly that the ones available to rescue usually had either health or behavioral issues.

I realized that I wasn’t the best owner for that situation.”
