“That was a long time ago, but I didn’t know if I wanted to go through that again.

It was a tremendous loss.

I still look at photos of him and tear up.

I also didn’t know, if Ike would live up to the standards of my last dog.

But, my daughter pulled the card of being an only child, and I caved.”

“I had to come to grips with my reasons for not getting a dog.

Primarily, I thought the city is not a place for a big dog, and I only wanted a big dog.

Also, we travel a lot, I didn’t want to pick up poop, and I just didn’t want another responsibility.

But that was only partially the reason, the other being that I hadn’t gotten over the loss of my last dog.”

“My daughter was the reason we got Ike.

I thought she shouldn’t grow up without a dog.

We met Ike on the street and that put the wheel in motion.  We were just walking to dinner and encountered him.  He was very friendly and his foster dad said, he was up for adoption.”

“He’s also a great companion.

We go on hikes in Montauk on a weekly basis.

We both get a little depressed on Monday, when it’s time to come back to the city.”

“They watch Ike when we go out of town, sometimes.

Ike has changed my life as a stay at home mom with a tweenage daughter.

He has given me a new purpose.

Caring for Ike gets me out of the house and meeting new people.

I can be a bit of an introvert, and Ike has gotten me out of my shell, so to speak.”

“We thought, this is the kind of dog we would like someday, only to find out that he was being fostered and available for adoption.

Two days later, Ike was ours.

Ike, along with his entire litter of siblings was rescued by a group called Social Tees.

The foster people were attached already, but couldn’t keep him.

They were working 10-12 hours a day.”

“Our daughter had been asking for a dog for ten years and my husband was adamantly against having a dog in the city.

Then one day he said, yes.

During a frigid winter two years ago, we decided we would wait until May, but two weeks into March we saw this beautiful dog being walking in Tribeca.”

“It can be fatal if not treated, or a dog doesn’t respond to steroids.

Zimmy was on steroids for an entire year.

That was seven years ago and he is still here.

I am a divorced middle aged guy and Zimmy has been my best friend.”

“If you realize the strength and life force that you get from interacting with such unconditionally loving beings, the actual tasks of caring for them become menial.

Having dogs while in chronic pain, challenged my husband’s patience.

His tolerance and patience grew from being around such innocent, loving beings that just wanted to love him.

His personality has changed in that he has learned love and compassion towards not only them, but himself.”

“They are two years old.

Teller was not happy at first.

It was a hard adjustment.

From early on, we knew we were not going to have three dogs on the bed.

Teller had the privilege of being the only one on the bed.

Two years later, we wake up with three dogs on the bed.

My husband has had serious health issues for the past 20 years.

He has had 18 surgeries on his back.

He also had a stroke right after we got Ivy and Zoe.

We looked at each other like we were insane because we had two puppies and a grown dog, and I didn’t have enough hands to take care of everything.”
