“I thought New York City was a difficult place to raise a dog, so we wanted a smallish dog.

I would get into bed and go on Pet Finder on my phone at 11:00 at night, and look for New York rescue puppies.

Initially, I looked at Labrador Retriever rescues, but I spoke to someone at Unleashed NYC, the rescue group, and she had adopted two dogs from Unleashed, NYC and had a great experience.

The provide a link to puppies they have up for adoption.”

“I grew up with a lot of pets– cats, dogs, rabbits, gerbils, and more.

I had a horse and we had a barn full of animals.

I had never really had a pet of my own.

Those were family animals.

My husband had a dog growing up.

Our nine year old son loves animals, too.

We knew we wanted a dog or a cat, but my son decided we should get a dog.”

“It can be fatal if not treated, or a dog doesn’t respond to steroids.

Zimmy was on steroids for an entire year.

That was seven years ago and he is still here.

I am a divorced middle aged guy and Zimmy has been my best friend.”

“About eight years ago both my sister and veterinarian noticed that Zimmy’s head shape was changing.

Instead of being round it was caved in looking.

We went to a dog neurologist and he was diagnosed with a rare German Shepherd disease, called Muscular Myelitis.

It wears away the muscle mass in the dog’s head.”

“He had crazy looking ears and a great soul.

I got him on June 1st, and I call that summer, my summer of Zimmy, because I was off from work and spent every day with him.

We went to the beach, hiked mountains or had some sort of daily adventure.

When I got him, he was about a year old.

He has been the love of my life for the past nine years.”

“My girlfriend and I live pretty hectic lives and it’s easy after a week of work to veg out at home and relax, but having a dog has given us a reason to get out of the city more often.

We like to get out to the woods, (which is our roots), and the beach.

On Monday, we went to the beach with Isabel and I threw a frisbee into the ocean.

She is usually tentative around the ocean, but this time, she dove head on into the water and body surfed a wave back to shore.

It was beautiful to see.

Having Isabel has allowed me to reassess my time and goals.

It’s easy to get caught up doing my work, which is indoors.

I’ve realized how much we value our time outside.

I realize that through Isabel.

“There were about 40 people waiting in the lot for their dogs to arrive.

After bringing Isabel home, I immediately thought we were lucky.

We wound up with a dog who was pretty responsive to house training.

She had accidents like any other dog, but she was quick to learn.

Since getting Isabel, I think I have risen to the challenge of becoming a responsible dog owner; by walking, feeding, training, and just being there for her.

This is a healthy stepping stone in my life.”

“We both grew up with dogs, so we knew what we were in for.

We went to a parking lot in Morristown, New Jersey at 3 A.M.

That was when Alpha Dog Transport rolled in.

I remember thinking it would be a small van that would be used for transport, and then there was a semi-truck full of rescue dogs heading to their forever homes waiting for us.”

“I always have a good time with her.

Once in late October, I took her on a hiking trip with me and she had the time of her life.  She was fetching sticks down the trail, digging in the dirt and running until she was exhausted.  My boyfriend and I love to hike, so she is a great match.

She’s been a bonding experience; she’s our fur baby.  She makes us feel like are a family, not just a couple.”

“One of the worst moments was when she had fleas.  She got tapeworms from biting and swallowing the fleas.

She almost died from the tapeworms.  She was dehydrated, she couldn’t keep food down and the anti-nausea meds weren’t working.

She lost consciousness in my arms and I thought she was going to die.

They injected her with fluids twice and re-injected her with anti-nausea meds and slowly she began to respond to the drugs and recover.”
