BABKA, THE JACK RUSSELL/RAT TERRIER/CHIHUAHUA RESCUE FROM BIDE-A-WEE (PART 5)

FullSizeRender-143

“The first time I noticed how much of an impact Babka had on my life was during a snowstorm a few weeks after getting her.

We usually just stayed inside, but she needed to be walked and I took her out.

Just getting out of the house and walking in the fresh snow felt calming.

I was appreciative that another living body needed me and got me out of the house.  My routine had changed and I liked it.

My relationship with my husband has grown, in that we are on a team with a common goal; taking care of Babka.

Having Babka makes us feel more like a family, not just a couple.”

LEO, THE LIONHEARTED, MIRACLE TERRIER RESCUE (PART 4)

“My mother cooks for him, plays with him and even walks him.

Leo acts as a therapy dog as well as a companion.

My mother has a routine with him and it keeps her mind busy.

Leo is very social, he wants to play with every dog he sees, so she has been forced to be social as well.

All in all, Leo has been a help to our family.”

“After opening her up and discovering she was pregnant, they closed her up, unsure if the puppies would survive, but they did.

Leo is a miracle baby.

One of the rescuers said, the puppies had hearts of lions, so we called him Leo (the lionhearted).

One of the reasons for getting Leo was so that he could be a companion for my mother.

She is 83 and has early stages of dementia.  Her Doctor recommended getting another dog to help keep her focused and social.”

LEO, THE LIONHEARTED, MIRACLE TERRIER RESCUE (PART 2)

“I filled out an application for him on the Friday before Mother’s Day and that Sunday, I got a call to go to Unleashed on Columbus Avenue to meet with him.

He and his brother were both available.

I had filled out the application for Leo, so I met with him, and after the apartment inspection he was ours.

I found out that his mom and two other dogs were surrendered to a shelter and immediately spayed and neutered, without knowing that one of the dogs was pregnant.”

“I was looking for a small dog after I dog sat for a friend of mine who has a chihuahua.

I had a Rottweiler, German Shepherd mix before that who passed away at the age of 15.

We thought we wouldn’t get another dog, but after sitting for a small dog, we decided we wanted another dog; and we wanted a small dog.

You can take a small dog everywhere–on the train, a bus, in a cab and on a plane.

I found Leo on the Eve’s Sanctuary website.

WILLOW, THE ROTTWEILER, BOXER, BEAGLE, CHOW CHOW, TERRIER MIX RESCUE (PART 4)

“Willow changed my personal travel schedule and now I spend a lot more time in NYC.

Before I got her, I worked in London and other cities, but I try to be home as much as possible.

Having her encourages me to have more stability in my life.”

“They got a lot of healthy dogs from a kill shelter in Kentucky.

I started following their website to see when they got new dogs.

I put in an application after I saw Willow’s picture, and was approved right away.

I met her for the first time when I picked her up from the shelter.”

“I thought it was time to get a dog.

The ability to travel with, and include them on outdoor excursions made me want a dog over a cat.

I used to foster dogs for Social Tees, the rescue group, but ended up getting Willow at the Sullivan County SPCA.

I had a ski rental last year nearby and found this SPCA online.”

PENNY, THE DACHSHUND MIX FROM RESCUE DOGS ROCK (PART 5, HE SAID)

FullSizeRender-357

“It took six months to trust her off leash and be confident that she wouldn’t run off.

Penny has really come into her own.

She trusts us.  We have developed a great bond.

The best thing about having her is the joy she has brought to our lives.

I consider her a missing piece that made our family more complete.

I think the hardest part of having a dog is the time and commitment.

Penny requires a certain amount of time every day, so we sacrifice other things in order to take care of her.

Whether it’s work, exercise, or my social life, I am very happy to have the responsibility and live up to it.”

“She was confused at first, but took to her crate right away.

It really helped give her a sense of security–having her own crate.

She had been sharing a crate with a German Shepherd at her foster person’s house.

We started calling her Penny right away and she began responding to her new name after a few weeks.

Over time Penny acclimated to New York City life pretty well.

We trained her to play off leash in Central Park after having her for three months, and at first, it was only for short periods of time.”
