“I have found that my dogs play a similar role in my life.

For me, what’s most joyous is accepting responsibility for them.

They give me the chance to give them the care and love they innately deserve.

That means consistency and being a presence in their life on a daily basis.

They give me the chance to be a better person.”

“I am a teacher and I work with some kids that have emotional difficulties.

I see how helpful the dogs are in stressful situations and how stabilizing and reassuring they can be.

Some of the kids have service dogs, which provide a venue for affection and the opportunity to care for another being without judgement or conditions.”

“There weren’t major changes when Percy lost his eyesight.

They had both been taught visual as well as aural commands, so the transition was pretty smooth.

I am not sure Watson is aware that Percy is blind, but they don’t run around as much together.

When we walk, Watson will walk on the outside to keep Percy sandwiched in between us.

As a New York City teacher, I definitely carry a lot of stress on a daily basis and living and working with the dogs has shown me how to deal with my feelings better.”

“Percy, for instance could be shown behaviors and would remember them, whereas Watson  was taught certain behaviors, by having us catch him doing them and calling out the word for the action.

For example, Watson learned to sit by sitting and having us call out the word, sit.

Percy is five months older than Watson, but we trained them together, although Percy was already housebroken.

Percy is eight and Watson is almost eight.

About 3 and a half years ago Percy had an infection which turned into an auto immune condition.  The illness led to chronic inflammation of his eyes and glaucoma with scarring and he became blind.”

“I got my dogs with my partner, so it wasn’t primarily my decision.

I am extremely glad, though.

I wasn’t involved in selecting and purchasing them, but I was very involved with teaching and training them.

I taught them how to sit, stay, wait for us to walk before them, and other general forms of etiquette.

It was interesting to see how differently Percy and Watson learned from one another.”

“Mentally, Rosie has added to my life in so many ways– she relaxes me, makes me laugh, forces me to be in the moment more and gets me to enjoy being outside more.

I also socialize more since having Rosie.

My wife and I have met several people that have become friends in the dog community.

I think my wife and I spend more time together relaxing with Rosie and more conversations, in general.

Overall, Rosie has improved my quality of life dramatically.

I am grateful my wife persisted to get a dog.”

“We chose Rosie because of her spots, as well as seeming a bit more independent than the other puppies.

Once they were old enough for adoption, my wife got on a plane and went to Detroit and brought Rosie home to Washington D.C.

It was really difficult when we first got Rosie.

She was still a puppy and took up all of our time.

She needed 24/7 supervision in the beginning, but after two months of development she became less needy and demanding, and more independent and housebroken.

We just lived through it.”

“The breeder had a list of people waiting for a puppy.

For my wife’s birthday I showed her the names on the waitlist, with our name included and she was extremely happy.

We waited for the right litter for us, personally.

The breeder sent us videos of the puppies and we narrowed it down to two puppies.”

“My wife really wanted a dog, and had been asking to get one for three years.

She had been showing me photos and videos of Newfie’s, and already had a breeder in mind.

My main holdout was the time commitment to a dog, but I agreed after three years, basically, because she wore me down.

I also realized that there would never be an ideal time, so now was as any.”

“Rosie is literally the sunshine in our lives.

We have had more strife in our lives in the past 10 months than ever before.

She forces us to be in the moment.

My husband and I are both logical and planners, thinking about the future.

Rosie encourages us to live in the here and now.

That brings us a real experimental joy.

We never know what’s next with Rosie, but we are along for the ride.”
