“We all got in the car and my sister drove us to the first event, which was the furthest away, but they didn’t have any puppies so I was ready to leave.

My ex saw this dog that he wanted to meet.

He was being walked on a leash so we thought he belonged to someone, but he was indeed up for adoption.

We talked to the people at Petco, where the event was being held to ask about the health history of the dog called, Lyle.

He was really sick and emaciated.

They told us that he was a rescue from Texas.”

“We traveled for 3 weeks and when we came home, I suggested again that we get a puppy.

He made an excuse the first week, but the second week, my sister visited, and she and I both insisted we go to an adoption event.

He kicked and screamed the whole ride there.

It was the first time we argued in front of my sister (who is also my best friend).

We didn’t tell him there were 3 adoption events happening that day.”

“As the end was getting closer, I gave in and agreed to pick up Diego.

I changed my mind because my sister found a home for her other 2 dogs, pugs.  My wife really wanted Diego, so I agreed to it.

I went up to Rochester before she went into hospice to say goodbye and I rented a car, got a crate and wanted to get out of there so quickly, that I got a speeding ticket.

Meanwhile, Diego didn’t know what was going on and started hyperventilating in the back.  I would stop along the way to walk him, but nothing helped.”

“Then we took him to Gotham Vet, and the vet suspected that he injured his neck,

it was awful because he was in so much pain that I was beside myself.”

TWIGGY, THE ITALIAN GREYHOUND/CHIHUAHUA MIX RESCUE (PART 3)

“She said, I have the perfect dog for you, and went and got Twiggy, who at the time was called Grace.

Twiggy was the dog we had craned our necks earlier to look at.

She told us Twiggy’s background we gave her our references.

She said, she admired one of our references, who turned out to be the publicist for the Humane Society.

I thought it was a done deal.

She came back with the paperwork and said, I am so sorry, I’ve been away for a week and there are two people ahead of you for Twiggy.”

“Our Chihuahua died suddenly and I think we were without a pet for three months.

It was so quiet in the apartment.

We devoted one Saturday and Sunday to going to many animal shelters.

We looked both in and out of the city, and went to six shelters that Sunday.

As we walked into the Humane Society on 59th Street, a technician was taking this beautiful little dog for a walk.”

Bodi, the Great Rescue From Mississippi (Husband 1 Said, Part 1)

“My husband wanted a dog desperately and I said it isn’t the right time, and he said, It’s never going to be the right time.

I conceded.

We went on Pet Finder one Sunday morning as an exercise, because we were just beginning the search.  We have two shelter cats and getting them was like an act of congress, so we thought it was going to take a long time.”

Milo and Mr. Bert, the Delinquent Rescues (Part 3)

“I wasn’t really looking for another dog.

I knew my husband wouldn’t be thrilled, but I saw Milo at an adoption event at our pet store.  He was the exact same size as Mr. Bert, but with a very different personality.

We call Mr. Bert the mean mother because he’s always correcting other dogs.

We call Milo the permanent puppy because he is always getting into trouble.”

“We thought we’d just visit, but one thing led to another and Mr. Bert came home with us.

He was originally called Tank, but we were listening to Lolita on our road trip so we called him Mr. Humbert (Bert for short).

That was 2011.

Bert was very attached to my college aged son and didn’t want to travel anymore.

Whenever he saw my suitcase he wouldn’t leave my son’s lap and made himself scarce during travel preparations.”

“We had large dogs and when they started dying of old age we decided to downsize the dogs.

I travel a lot and missed my dogs, so I decided to get dogs that I could take on a plane.

Mr. Bert came first.

My daughter, sister and I were on a road trip passing thru Portland, Oregon and my daughter had to visit a rescue shelter for small dogs a block away from where we were staying.

Our big dog  had died a few months before .”
