LEO, THE LIONHEARTED, MIRACLE TERRIER RESCUE (PART 4)

“My mother cooks for him, plays with him and even walks him.

Leo acts as a therapy dog as well as a companion.

My mother has a routine with him and it keeps her mind busy.

Leo is very social, he wants to play with every dog he sees, so she has been forced to be social as well.

All in all, Leo has been a help to our family.”

JOJO, THE BELOVED FRENCH BULLDOG, SHARED BY TWO PEOPLE (PART 5)

Jojo is my best buddy.

I take him with me everywhere.

He came with me to the Dr. for my annual physical and when the Dr. tested my knee reflexes with a medical hammer, Jojo started growling at him, thinking I was in danger.

He would protect me at any and all costs.

As a single person, getting outside my own head and taking care of another being fulfills my life.”

“One night Jojo jumped off the bed and his legs gave out from under him.

I knew he was in distress because he was panting heavily and he couldn’t walk.

I rushed him to the Animal Hospital, Blue Pearl, and they operated on his spine the next morning.

It took four to five months for him to heal, and he is as recovered as he will ever be.

He can run and fetch, climb up on rocks, and ride on the bike.

He can’t jump off of anything, play tug of war, and he can’t wrestle.”

“Jojo became more and more of a shared dog, and we consider it joint custody.

Two things changed  everything with Jojo and me.

Hiking and biking.

We started to go on the bus to Harriman State Park and hike all day.

We got there at 10:30 a.m. and left at 5:00 p.m.

I bike everywhere, so I bought a dog carrier that I attached to my bike and we are a team.

We rode to down to the battery along the river and then up to the little red lighthouse at the George Washington Bridge.”

“His owner said, Jojo would come home home after our trip to the dog run and Central Park, and pass out from exhaustion.

Next, we started having sleepovers.

His owner and I decided that I would keep him for several days at a time, which turned into Thursday evening through Monday morning.

I started taking him to the veterinarian, because I had him on the weekend, and his owner and I work during the week, and neither of us have much free time.”

ELLIE (SHORT FOR ELEPHANT), THE FRENCH BULLDOG THAT IS AN ENTERTAINING CLOWN, AND GREAT COMFORT (PART 3)

“After hearing my personal story (because I had to fill out a form explaining why I wanted a French Bulldog, on her website before even being eligible for one of her pups), she offered to sell me the Ellie, for the price of the cream puppy.

I pretty much knew at that moment that I wanted her.

That was in August and I picked her up a month later.

Ellie has been great for my parents and me.

It’s a new life in our house.”

“One of my friends researched French Bulldog breeders online and found one up in the Bronx in an area called, Country Club, near the water.

My friend, my sister’s boyfriend and I went to the breeder’s house and she had two left in  a litter up for adoption.

There was a little cream puppy and a little blue puppy.

The blue ones can go for up to $15,000, so I didn’t think she was in my price range and I didn’t ask about her.”

“I’d been wanting a Frenchie for a few years.

They are like clowns; they have funny temperaments.

I was a college student so I couldn’t afford to get a dog, and I didn’t have the time to care for one either.

I graduated from college last May and then a few weeks after that, my sister died in a car accident.

She was 20 years old.

My parents thought it was time for me to get a dog.

I wasn’t working yet, so I had a lot of free time.”

CHEWIE, THE BORDER COLLIE/AUSSIE LIFESAVER (PART 4)

“The most joyous moment I can think of, was the first time I brought her home.

I realized that with Chewie, I am not alone; that we are going to go places together.

She acts as a service dog.

I clean houses and I bring her to work with me.

She picks an area in the apartment, out of the way and stays there the entire time I am working.

She trusts me, and knows that I will come and get her when I am done.

Chewie has changed my life in that I am able to cope with every day life better than before I got her.”

“Walking a dog 3 or 4 times a day gives me clarity.  It makes me feel like whatever is troubling me is going to be okay.

The routine gives me something to do, and my focus is on something other than myself.

Chewie knows when I am unhappy.

She gets very upset if I am crying, so I try not to cry in front of her.

If she feels that I am sad or upset, she won’t leave my side.”
