“Everybody in my family likes dogs and we didn’t have one.

My seven year old really wanted a dog, so we started looking online for rescues.

We looked on Petfinder, but a friend who got her dogs through Unleashed, NY, recommended them.

We saw a puppy called Hugo, who the family liked.

He  was going to be brought up north from Virginia in the fall, when we wanted our dog.

We expressed interest in Hugo, but he died from Parvo.

He had two sisters in his litter and Olive was one of them.”

“After the four weeks of no walking he still had exercise restriction; no running and no long walks for another three months.

It was very rewarding when he was finally able to exercise.

He ran and ran and had 20 times the endurance.

The most important thing was that it was all worth it.

Without Charlie we wouldn’t live where we do.

We live by the park for Charlie.”

“Her last dog was a Labrador Retriever, and they bond with more than one person.

Charlie is a Ridgeback Redbone Coonhound mix.

He was so sweet and gentle and she was just happy that I liked him and agreed to get a  dog that she said yes, to adopting Charlie.

He was great from the start, but six months later we found out he had heart worm.

That was challenging because he had several months of exercise restriction, including four weeks of just walking outside to go to the bathroom and then having to go right back inside.

He was confused and it was the only time I understood the concept of one day at a time.

He used to exercise four times a day before the heart worm diagnosis and all of a sudden he didn’t know why he couldn’t chase squirrels and rabbits and do his thing.”

“My girlfriend had to put her dog down after our third date.

She wanted another dog after some time passed and so she got me to attend an adoption event (that I didn’t want to go to).

I’ve always wanted a Rhodesian Ridgeback.

That’s when we saw Charlie.

We thought he was someone’s dog and that he wasn’t up for adoption.

Eventually, I asked someone at the Pets for Life adoption event if he belonged to anyone and they said, he did not, and that he was indeed up for adoption.

I said to my girlfriend, how about this guy, but she was opposed to having a Ridgeback (because they bond with one person, and she thought it would be me).”

The best and worst time we’ve had with Charlie was after moving to NYC when we left him with my boyfriend’s mom because we both had jobs, but didn’t have a place to live.

We couch surfed for two weeks until we found an apartment.

We were without Charlie for two months, until Christmas.

Coming back to NYC with Charlie was the happiest day of his life.

He and my boyfriend are extremely attached and I am a third wheel.

My boyfriend hijacked my dog.

Ridgebacks are one dog owners, but this Rhodesian has two.

I feel like I don’t credit for the early morning walks.

We’ve met great people on our walks.  We’ve made a lot of friends and so has Charlie.

One of the nicer experiences was when we went away for a few days and a friend from the park took care of Charlie.

He’s been following her ever since.

“We all got in the car and my sister drove us to the first event, which was the furthest away, but they didn’t have any puppies so I was ready to leave.

My boyfriend saw this dog that he wanted to meet.

He was being walked on a leash so we thought he belonged to someone, but he was indeed up for adoption.

My boyfriend talked to the people at Petco, where the event was being held to ask about the health history of the dog called, Lyle.

He was really sick and emaciated.

They told us that he was a rescue from Texas.

A woman had driven by him day after day and noticed that he was tied up, his body was fly bitten, emaciated and deteriorating.

One day she knocked on the owners’ door and asked if she could take him home with her,  they told her to take him.

He was transported to Denver, where we lived at the time, and saw him at the Petco adoption event.”

” The first month my boyfriend and I started dating, my fourteen year old black lab, Calvin, died.

My boyfriend came with me when it was time to euthanize him.

That was definitely a bonding experience.

After 6 months of dating we moved in together and I insisted we get a dog.

He didn’t want a dog, so we put it off for a month.

We traveled for 3 weeks and when we came home, I suggested again that we get a puppy.

He made an excuse the first week, but the second week, my sister visited and she and I both insisted we go to an adoption event.

He kicked and screamed the whole ride there.

It was the first time we argued in front of my sister (who is also my best friend).

We didn’t tell him there were 3 adoption events happening that day.”

Allie, the beagle mix (part 3)

“I feel a purpose for something other than myself.

The best experience with Allie has been the team work between my husband and me as parents.

I adopted my last dog as an adult so I was single when I got Monty.

Having Allie before kids has been a great trial run for us as parents-to-be.

My husband and I have similar temperaments, and Allie has taught of us that no matter what is going on in our lives, when we come home to her, she is our family and that is the most important priority in our lives.

It’s about loving each other and being loved as a family.”

“We met her, fell in love and took her home.

All the other dogs were full of energy and she was just sitting in the crate acting mellow.

We wanted a mellow dog.

She was very timid so we started working on socializing her right away.

We took her to a Monday night puppy play group at Unleashed and we discovered that she was the mediator of the group– a policeman, if you will.

She barked when there was either too much excitement or not enough (to get other dogs to play).

Having a dog has changed the pace of my life.

Allie makes me stop and smell the roses, literally, instead of getting caught up in the hustle and bustle of NYC.

She also keeps us on a schedule for walking and playtime.”

“We had a rescue beagle called Monty and he passed away about 3 years ago.

We decided it was time to get another rescue dog because my husband and I love dogs.

I asked for a rescue puppy for Christmas and my husband found Allie on Petfinder.

We were looking for a dog under twenty pounds and my husband probably put in beagle, because we like beagles.

Allie came up under Louie’s Legacy, a rescue shelter on Staten Island.

We filled out an application for her.

We passed the home interview and then got to meet her at a Petco on Staten Island where they were showing her and other dogs up for adoption.

Her litter mates had already been adopted.

She was the biggest of the litter.”
