“Having Stella is something that bonds us together.

As a result of having her, we have more patience with one another and have created a stronger set of communication skills.

Stella has brought out a more nurturing side to my boyfriend and he truly loves her, which in turn adds an element to our relationship.

We spend a lot of time outdoors with Stella, whereas we might have just been indoors, doing our own thing before.

Sometimes when I am watching a beautiful sunset while walking Stella, I think to myself,  if not for her, I might not be seeing this right now.

She has taught us to be more observant of the world around us.”

“Stella can fix her own leash if it gets tangled.

She knows how to spin on command and she can jump and catch a ball on a fly.

When she was very little and we brought her home, I had just started a new job and was gone half the day.

It took a toll on my relationship with my boyfriend, who had never owned a pet before, and wasn’t sure he wanted a dog, let alone a puppy, but was supporting my decision and desire.

All of a sudden he became Stella’s major care giver and it wasn’t a job he was used to.

I changed some things around in my schedule and took on more responsibility.

Over time, Stella won over boyfriend’s heart.”

“After hearing her story, we wanted her mom, but I knew that I wasn’t experienced enough to rescue a dog who has been through trauma because I’ve never owned my own dog.

We chose Stella.

It felt right because she’s my first dog and we are her family.

We’ve had her since August of 2017.

Since having her, some of our best times were when we were establishing a bond with Stella by teaching her commands and tricks.”

“We found out her mom was dumped in a High School Football field and they didn’t know how long she had been there.

A good samaritan called the ACC (Animal Control Center) and got her mom to a rescue group, where they realized she was pregnant.

Luckily, her mom gave birth under the care of a veterinarian with the rescue group and she delivered nine healthy puppies.”

“It was a beautiful day in my life.

I knew I couldn’t leave without taking her with me.

I called my boyfriend to come to the event and meet us.

He came to the event, and we gave puppy back to Palmetto Paws Rescue, where they put her back in her crate while we discussed the reality of owning a dog.

We asked for more information about her background.”

“I grew up in a home where rescuing animals was a regular occurrence.

My Family always rescued older animals that were about to be euthanized.

I’ve always wanted my own dog.

I have a man in my life and we are very committed to one another.

We were able to financially and emotionally support a dog.

I knew I wanted a rescue, because that’s what my family did and it was important to me.”

“She was confused at first, but took to her crate right away.

It really helped give her a sense of security–having her own crate.

She had been sharing a crate with a German Shepherd at her foster person’s house.

We started calling her Penny right away and she began responding to her new name after a few weeks.

Over time Penny acclimated to New York City life pretty well.

We trained her to play off leash in Central Park after having her for three months, and at first, it was only for short periods of time.”

“We also spoke with her foster person, who told us that she was originally nervous but that was becoming less so, and she thought she would turn into a great dog– with the right people.

We went home, walked it over for a few weeks, and decided to formalize the adoption process.

She was a good size for an apartment and we liked that.

She was a dachshund mix, and we felt that her young age made her trainable to be a good city dog.

We were excited to have her.”

“She was being fostered locally in Yonkers and she was clearly not a pure dachshund, which was my preference.

We liked a photo of her running in the water and decided to meet her.

I reached out to Rescue Dogs Rock, the rescue agency, and said we were interested in meeting Lori (her name at the time),

They set up an appointment for us to meet her in person.

She was a little shy, sweet and friendly (once she got past her shyness).

She didn’t show any signs of aggression.”

“I’ve always loved dogs and I’ve always wanted a dog, and I had a change in my job situation.

I was going to be working from home, so I would have the ability to give time to taking care of a dog.

My girlfriend and I searched for rescue dogs online.

We knew we wanted a rescue.

My girlfriend wanted to get a dachshund, so we googled dachshund rescue and Pet finder showed us various dachshunds, including Penny (whose name wasn’t Penny at the time).
