Oscar Madison, The Messy Terrier/Sheepdog Mix Rescue (He Said, Part 3)

“Oscar is like my best friend.

I like the responsibility of caring for him.

I know he likes me and that makes me feel good.

We love walking together and driving in the car.

We like being outside together.

He almost died from some flesh eating bacteria about mine months ago.”

“There hasn’t been a whole lot of improvement with his manners.

We got him on a Friday and Jack Klugman died that Sunday.

My first thought when he died was that this dog is going to be called, Oscar Madison.

He lives up to his name.

Every evening we put about 20 toys in a neat pile in front of the living room fireplace and by the time we wake up in the morning, they are spewed all over the living room floor.

I know something is wrong with him if there is no mess in the morning.”

“Mentally, Rosie has added to my life in so many ways– she relaxes me, makes me laugh, forces me to be in the moment more and gets me to enjoy being outside more.

I also socialize more since having Rosie.

My wife and I have met several people that have become friends in the dog community.

I think my wife and I spend more time together relaxing with Rosie and more conversations, in general.

Overall, Rosie has improved my quality of life dramatically.

I am grateful my wife persisted to get a dog.”

“I made a spread sheet dog friendly apartments on the Upper West Side.

We finally found a prewar building near a subway station, as well as Central Park.

We have only been in NYC for 2 1/2 weeks.

Rosie is doing well as far as adjusting to her new home and city.

The biggest challenge is her wanting to only to the bathroom on grass.”

“The Poodle Newfoundland ┬ádog mix seemed like a good compromise.

I wanted a dog so badly.

I grew up on a farm in Wisconsin so I was used to having animals around me all the time.

Being around animals gave me great comfort.

Once my husband agreed to getting a dog, I went back to the research and contacted Newfie/Poodle breeders.

There are less than ten in the nation.”

Java, the Apricot Hypoallergenic Labradoodle puppy (part 5)

Our kids weren’t around when our last dog was a puppy, and sometimes they treat Java like he is a toy.

When he was smaller, they liked to carry him and they had to realize that as he got bigger, they shouldn’t carry him, because they are a part of his world, but he is not necessarily part of theirs.

He is not at their beckoned call.

Everybody has to be responsible for Java.

We all feed and walk him.

The four of us come together to focus our attention on him.”

“He has separation anxiety and barks whenever I leave him.

We’ve been training him to stay in his crate with the door open and giving him a kong filled with frozen yogurt or peanut butter.

It’s still a work in progress.

One of the great things about Java, is his personality.

He is a very sweet dog and plays well with others.”

“We were used to having a well trained older dog.

When we got our last dog’s leash, he would run to the door.

With Java when I get his leash, he just looks at me, wondering what’s going on.

We have to coax him to go out.

Also, Java doesn’t necessarily pay attention to his surroundings.

If he is chewing on a bone or a toy, he will start chewing whatever is next to the bone or toy, without noticing the difference.”

“When they had a litter of three we had first pick because we were the first to put down a deposit after being approved.

Java was the only apricot and he had a white heart on his forehead, so we knew he was going to be ours.

We’ve had him since October 7th.

The best and worst thing about having Java, is that he is still a puppy.”

“We lost our dogs of 17 years and waited a respectable amount of time to get another dog.

After a year, we decided to get a Labradoodle.

Our first dog was a rescue and shed an incredible amount, plus our nephew is allergic to dogs, so we knew we wanted a non-shedding/hypoallergenic dog.

We have a friend who has two doodles from Java’s breeder.

We contacted the breeder, they approved us and put us on the list for a puppy.”
