“Once he got out of his collar, ran down the block, and headed towards the nearest avenue with a lot of traffic.  Luckily, a construction worker caught him and held onto him.

I got a camera to see what he was up to during the day because I work long hours at the office.  I watched him sitting by himself and even though it didn’t seem to bother him, I wasn’t okay with that.

I decided I would feel better if he had a companion.

Everyone tried to discourage me from getting another dog.  They said, you’re not going to be able to handle this.”

“There was an event at the Petco near my apartment and Buddy was the first and only dog I met.

I felt like I could relate to him.

He seemed happy and content, like a chill little guy.  There was another woman interested but she seemed weird.

They asked me if I wanted to take him for a walk and I walked him home to my apartment.  He sniffed around, hopped on the couch and seemed at home.

I went out of the room and he followed me.  He’s always by my feet.  He’s my little shadow.

Having Buddy helped me get over a bad relationship quickly.

I feel like I am pretty fortunate, and giving Buddy a good life means a lot to me.  I know that he feels safe and loved.”

“My boyfriend was living with me and he was really against getting a dog.  He thought it was too much work.

It was something I wanted for a long time.

After he moved out, I started looking for a dog.

I got Buddy the day after my 30th birthday.  He was my birthday present to myself.

“Jack has taught me a lot about taking care of another being.

On stressful days, he’s what I look forward to when coming home.

A partner has to love him, in addition to loving me.

He’s part of the  package.”

“He loves to hike, camp, and swim.

We moved back to the city after a year and he seemed to bounce right back.

He adjusts well wherever he is.

Having Jack has made me more open to talking to strangers and making connections.

I keep in touch with friends I made in Colorado and it’s been two years since we left.”

“Jack was three to four months old when I got him.

It was an impulse decision, but it worked out because I lost my job a week after getting him home, so I got to spend quality time training him and helping him adjust to the city.

A month after he came to New York City, we moved to Colorado for a job.

He loved the mountains.”

“I found his picture through a rescue group in Tennessee called Moonshine Dog Rescue.

If you committed to buying one of their dogs, they promised transporting the dog up east.

Once I committed to adopting Jack, another rescue group called Alpha dog Transport brought him from the scout, it a tractor trailer full of dogs from different rescue groups to a designated are off route 80 in New Jersey.”

“I just really wanted to take care of a living creature, and I also wanted a sidekick.

I was just coming out of a breakup and I went on Petfinder to find a rescue dog.

I typed in Shepherd mix; male or female.

I knew I wanted a medium size dog, I didn’t care about the breed or sex.”

“We brought Dolly home and she came down with the same virus so we had to bring her back to the the animal hospital at Bide-A-Wee.

We saw Bucky again, and got to see how much he and Dolly had already bonded, trying to play together through their crates, while recovering.

I couldn’t leave Bucky there, so after they were well enough, we brought both of them home.”

“About six months later, I was working with Bide-A-Wee and I attended their annual fundraising gala.

They brought a few rescue dogs to the event. I was introduced to Dolly (the wire-haired).  She was adorable and kissed me right away.

It was love at first sight.

I decided it was the right time for me to get a dog.”
