TWIGGY, THE ITALIAN GREYHOUND/CHIHUAHUA MIX RESCUE (PART 5)

“I am lucky to have such understanding neighbors.

I received a note under my door the first time I left her alone saying, your dog has been barking and crying the entire time you were gone. It was so sad, the next time you leave, please just drop her off with us.

We leave her with the family next door, but I don’t want to take advantage of them.

I have been considering bark busters, but am trying to leave her alone for short intervals of time and build up to longer periods.

Twiggy has become the emphasis of our lives.

We are devoted to her and she is devoted to us.”

“She apologized and swore she would find us a dog.

That Thursday she called and said, she was able to put us at the top of the list for Twiggy, with one caveat-we had to be on their behavioral therapist’s reality show.

We went to Broadway Barks and were filmed admiring Twiggy, even though we had adopted her the previous week.

Since that time, I have fallen in love with her and have a hard time being apart from her.

I took her to work with me for about a year and a half, but have now semi-retired and work from home.

I need to go out on appointments sometimes and we both get separation anxiety.”

“She said, I have the perfect dog for you, and went and got Twiggy, who at the time was called Grace.

Twiggy was the dog we had craned our necks earlier to look at.

She told us Twiggy’s background we gave her our references.

She said, she admired one of our references, who turned out to be the publicist for the Humane Society.

I thought it was a done deal.

She came back with the paperwork and said, I am so sorry, I’ve been away for a week and there are two people ahead of you for Twiggy.”

“My partner and I both craned our necks because she was so beautiful.

We assumed that she was one of the patients at the hospital, as opposed to one of the dogs up for adoption.

At the interview I was wearing a rainbow button, because the Supreme Court had just legalized gay marriage the day before.

The interviewer said, I see your button and I am so excited, I’ve been with my partner for 43 years.

We told her we were looking for a short haired, small female.

We thought she would bring out a chihuahua.”

“Our Chihuahua died suddenly and I think we were without a pet for three months.

It was so quiet in the apartment.

We devoted one Saturday and Sunday to going to many animal shelters.

We looked both in and out of the city, and went to six shelters that Sunday.

As we walked into the Humane Society on 59th Street, a technician was taking this beautiful little dog for a walk.”

“Bodie was listed as a Catahoula/Boxer mix, (his name was Nate at the time) and he was at a shelter in Mississippi.  We sent in the application digitally, thinking we wouldn’t hear anything for a week or so.

Someone from the shelter called us two hours later and said, he’s yours if you want him.

My first instinct was, something’s wrong with him, but my husband talked to the people at the shelter and found out they had googled him and seen the trailer to his movie.

They said, anyone who made a movie like that had to have a heart.

Bodie was ours we wanted him.”

” I moved in with my boyfriend(now husband), and we had a few conversations where I convinced him that it was time to get a dog, because honestly, there is never a right time and I was done waiting.

He knew it was important to me and he got on board quickly, though I instigated it.

The Sunday after Christmas, 2013, we were lounging in the kitchen, drinking coffee and I suggested that we look at dogs on Petfinder.

We were looking at a Catahoula Leopard dogs, (the state dog of La.).  We like labs but thought let’s look at something more unusual.”

“I always wanted a dog but because I am an actor and my schedule and my life were so unpredictable I always put it off.

Four years ago I was on tour with The Book of Mormon and I realized that my gift to myself    after the tour would be a dog.

I was done making sacrifices.

I knew how much I loved dogs and I wanted a dog.  I made it a priority.

I even made my security code on my phone, D-O-G-S.”

“Whenever I go home with Bodie now, they are like two long lost friends.

When you see another person parenting in the same way you do, you realize you are on the same page.  It makes me respect Mike all the more.

Raising a dog is a common goal that doesn’t stop.  It makes you closer on a daily basis.”

“My father had a heart attack and I went home to take care of him.  I took Bodie with me.   My father says he doesn’t care about dogs, but he warmed up to Bodie real quick.  Anytime I looked over, they were sleeping on the sofa together.

My dad is a pretty hard guy and Bodie softened him.”
