Rosie, the Newfie Mix (Newfoundland Poodle) He said, part 1

“My wife really wanted a dog, and had been asking to get one for three years.

She had been showing me photos and videos of Newfie’s, and already had a breeder in mind.

My main holdout was the time commitment to a dog, but I agreed after three years, basically, because she wore me down.

I also realized that there would never be an ideal time, so now was as any.”

Einstein, The Miniature Schnauzer Puppy That’s a Great Comfort to His People (Part 2, He Said)

“They don’t have the same breed rescue groups in Holland, so she found a breeder with a litter available.

They were quite particular, which led to an interview.

We are Australian, so it was more of a cultural interview.

They asked a few questions about our lifestyle over a cup of tea and lunch.

Their daughter was present as a translator because they only spoke Dutch and we spoke English.”

Babka, the Jack Russell/Rat Terrier, Chihuahua Rescue Mix (part 5)

“The first time I noticed how much of an impact Babka had on my life was during a snowstorm a few weeks after getting her.

We usually just stayed inside, but she needed to be walked and I took her out.

Just getting out of the house and walking in the fresh snow felt calming.

I was appreciative that another living body needed me and got me out of the house.  My routine had changed and I liked it.

My relationship with my husband has grown– we are on a team with a common goal; taking care of Babka.

Having Babka makes us feel more like a family, not just a couple.”

Niko, the Alaskan Klee Kai (part 3, she said)

“We both have new jobs this year and are planning a wedding, so there is a lot of stress.

Niko gives me such a sense of calm and peacefulness.

If I am having a bad day I always look forward to coming home.

He makes our house a home, and he is king of our household.”

Niko, the Alaskan Klee Kai (part 2, she said)

“I like the Schipperke and had thought about getting one when I was single a few years ago.

I am glad I waited.

Niko is a perfect mix of the dogs we liked.

He was the ultimate compromise.

I think Niko has changed my life in a positive way.

He gives us a reason to get up and around.

He’s motivation to get off the couch.

We see the sunrises and sunsets every day.

We walk all over the city and we travel with him.

He has a great attitude and he’s always up for an adventure.”

Sammy, the Bijon, Shitzu teddy bear mix (he said part 2)

“I looked at a few puppies at a pet shop and noticed a Bijon Shitzu mix that was on sale because it had been at the store for a long time.

He was four months old, so his cost was reduced.

Sammy was friendly, hypoallergenic and it seemed right.

i surprised both my daughters and they were very excited.

I set up a gated area in the living room with his crate and toys.

We had problems right off the bat because he pooped everywhere, including his crate and gated area.

I tried walking him constantly, but my wife and I weren’t ready to handle a puppy.”

Sammy, the Bijon, Shitzu teddy bear, pet shop rescue (she said, part 2)

“He called his mother, who used to breed dogs and told her he had a puppy for her.

My husband drove Sammy up to the Berkshire’s where she lives and left him with her.

After six weeks I felt bad for my husband and asked my mother-in-law if she would give Sammy back.

She was sad, and said she would miss him because he was the best dog she ever had, but ok.

And then Sammy came home.

My husband and daughters were so happy to have him back, that I felt good about bringing Sammy home.”

“My husband wanted a dog, so we got Sammy.

First, he went to different shelters on Long Island because he wanted a rescue.

Being highly allergic, he couldn’t find a dog he wasn’t allergic to, so he went to a pet store and found Sammy.

We think of Sammy as sort of a rescue because he was four and half months old and sickly.

He was beyond the usual pet shop puppy adoption age and my husband was worried and felt sorry for him.

I thought Sammy was cute and furry for about six days.

I couldn’t take the mess after less than a week.

Sammy wasn’t housebroken and he peed and poo’d everywhere.

After six days, I told my husband, the dog has to go.”

Allie, the rescue beagle mix (part 1)

“We had a rescue beagle called Monty and he passed away about 3 years ago.

We decided it was time to get another rescue dog because my husband and I love dogs.

I asked for a rescue puppy for Christmas and my husband found Allie on Petfinder.

We were looking for a dog under twenty pounds and my husband probably put in beagle, because we like beagles.

Allie came up under Louie’s Legacy, a rescue shelter on Staten Island.

We filled out an application for her.

We passed the home interview and then got to meet her at a Petco on Staten Island where they were showing her and other dogs up for adoption.

Her litter mates had already been adopted.

She was the biggest of the litter.”

Charlie, the lab mix with a great smile (part 4)

“I got a phone call at 10 p.m. saying he was a million times better and I could take him home  the next day.

$3200.00 later, he was perfectly fine.

In fact, he was trying to pick up trash to eat in the parking lot outside of the emergency vet practice.

My wife and I have become more outdoorsy since getting a dog.

We go to different beaches (that allow dogs).

We take him to Central Park, and spend a lot of time walking with him.

The responsibility of a dog is greater than you think, but it’s all worth it.”
