CHARLIE MEATBALL, THE RIDGEBACK MIX RESCUE, (SHE SAID, PART 1)

FullSizeRender-91

” The first month my ex-boyfriend and I started dating, my fourteen year old black lab, Calvin, died.

He came with me when it was time to euthanize him.

That was definitely a bonding experience.

After 6 months of dating we moved in together and I insisted we get a dog.

He didn’t want a dog, so we put it off for a month.”

DIEGO, AS IN DON DIEGO DE LA VEGA, AKA ZORRO (HE SAID PART 1)

“It was my wife’s idea to get Diego.

My sister was very ill and before she went into hospice care, she asked us to adopt him.

My wife had fallen in love with him when we visited previously, so she wanted to adopt him when my sister asked.

At first I told my sister, no.

It was an expense we couldn’t afford and we had just lost our last dog, Winnie.”

DIEGO, AS IN DIEGO RIVERA (SHE SAID PART 1)

“I met Diego because he belonged to my sister-in-law in Rochester.  We were visiting the family and they had just gotten Diego as an addition to their two other dogs; 2 black pugs.

He was called Diego because somebody sold him to her as a rare hairless Mexican dog breed.  He had very little hair at the time.  They said that a Hairless Mexican Dog’s tummy would act like a natural hot water bottle.  I had him on my lap, trying to feel his warmth and was sort of buying into the story.

We know the story isn’t true because his hair grew back.”

ELLIE (SHORT FOR ELEPHANT), THE FRENCH BULLDOG THAT IS AN ENTERTAINING CLOWN, AND GREAT COMFORT (PART 3)

“After hearing my personal story (because I had to fill out a form explaining why I wanted a French Bulldog, on her website before even being eligible for one of her pups), she offered to sell me the Ellie, for the price of the cream puppy.

I pretty much knew at that moment that I wanted her.

That was in August and I picked her up a month later.

Ellie has been great for my parents and me.

It’s a new life in our house.”

ELLIE (SHORT FOR ELEPHANT), THE FRENCH BULLDOG THAT IS AN ENTERTAINING CLOWN, AND GREAT COMFORT (PART 2)

“One of my friends researched French Bulldog breeders online and found one up in the Bronx in an area called, Country Club, near the water.

My friend, my sister’s boyfriend and I went to the breeder’s house and she had two left in  a litter up for adoption.

There was a little cream puppy and a little blue puppy.

The blue ones can go for up to $15,000, so I didn’t think she was in my price range and I didn’t ask about her.”

ELLIE (SHORT FOR ELEPHANT), THE FRENCH BULLDOG THAT IS AN ENTERTAINING CLOWN, AND GREAT COMFORT (PART 1)

“I’d been wanting a Frenchie for a few years.

They are like clowns; they have funny temperaments.

I was a college student so I couldn’t afford to get a dog, and I didn’t have the time to care for one either.

I graduated from college last May and then a few weeks after that, my sister died in a car accident.

She was 20 years old.

My parents thought it was time for me to get a dog.

I wasn’t working yet, so I had a lot of free time.”

TWIGGY, THE ITALIAN GREYHOUND/CHIHUAHUA MIX RESCUE (PART 1)

“Our Chihuahua died suddenly and I think we were without a pet for three months.

It was so quiet in the apartment.

We devoted one Saturday and Sunday to going to many animal shelters.

We looked both in and out of the city, and went to six shelters that Sunday.

As we walked into the Humane Society on 59th Street, a technician was taking this beautiful little dog for a walk.”

Milo and Mr. Bert, the Delinquent Rescues (Part 1)

“We had large dogs and when they started dying of old age we decided to downsize the dogs.

I travel a lot and missed my dogs, so I decided to get dogs that I could take on a plane.

Mr. Bert came first.

My daughter, sister and I were on a road trip passing thru Portland, Oregon and my daughter had to visit a rescue shelter for small dogs a block away from where we were staying.

Our big dog  had died a few months before .”

Leroy, the Maltipoo (Maltese/Poodle Mix), (part 5)

“Leroy becomes even more affectionate when we are upset.

Usually, he gives affection on his terms, but when he senses a change in our mood or behavior he is very responsive.

He worries about us.

He adds to the happiness in our house.

It’s full of love.

No matter what is going on, I want to come home and see him.”

“We’ve had a lot of losses.

Their have been deaths in our families, and friends, too.

Leroy has been there for us.

He gives us snuggles and love and I really believe he knows when we are sad or sick.

He instantly calms down and curls up on our lap or chest.”
