“I just really wanted to take care of a living creature, and I also wanted a sidekick.

I was just coming out of a breakup and I went on Petfinder to find a rescue dog.

I typed in Shepherd mix; male or female.

I knew I wanted a medium size dog, I didn’t care about the breed or sex.”

Norman, the Goofy Shepherd/Husky Puppy That Makes Everyone Laugh (part 5)

“My husband and I are usually out and about and traveling, but Norman has caused us to be home and slow down.

We have spent every weekend at home and now have a greater appreciation for the city.

We take long walks through the park and spend more time at the dog run, because Norman loves it.”

They get along great, but Norman can be annoying because he wants to play more than she does (she’s 11), he gets the message most of the time and backs off.

We’ve had Norman four month and he’s such a ball of energy.

He’s funny; he’s that goofy puppy that makes everyone laugh.

He’s got long legs that he will hopefully, grow into, but right now he’s very uncoordinated and constantly tripping over his own legs.”

“I fell in love with his ears and smile.

He was being fostered by a couple on the upper east side and we met up an adoption event at Petco.

We brought our dog Hannah with us to see how they would get along.

Norman rolled over and was submissive towards Hanna, so we thought it was a good match.”

“Muddy Paws partners with Best Friends Animal Rescue, so I felt good about the organization.

I filled out an application and there was a phone interview.

Once I was approved I started looking online at the puppies and dogs for adoption.

After four weeks I saw Norman’s photo.”

My husband and I love having two dogs in the house.

We had Hannah, a Silky Terrier, and we had another dog that passed away in April.

We waited five months to get Norman.

I heard about a rescue group called Muddy Paws and I looked them up.

They had a lot of great dogs on their site.”

Koda, the intuitive German Shepherd (part 5)

“After a few months we noticed that Koda started playing with Winston.

He stopped being on guard and included Winston in our pack.

A dog is truly man’s best friend.

We go everywhere together.

I really believe that he has enhanced my relationship with my boyfriend.

He has given something of a common bond to our relationship.

He has given us something we can both care about.”

“The worst of times was his initial reaction to my dog, Winston.

It made me really sad to witness Koda snapping at him, and refusing to allow Winston to be  part of the pack.

Looking back, I realize it wasn’t his fault.

I walked Winston right into Koda’s home, his territory.

After the first meeting, we spent more time together in neutral places, like walking on the beach, or we would go to Sanford Farm, a large preserve, where people bring their dogs.”

“Having Koda is like having a kid together.

He adjusted pretty well after my dog died.

We treated him like he’s a member of the family.

He is never without us.

He travels with us, wherever we go.

The best of times with Koda, is when I am in NYC because walking around with him encourages me to explore areas I wouldn’t otherwise see.”

“Meanwhile, my dog was diagnosed with bone cancer.

Koda sensed that and responded with typical animal instincts and didn’t want him to be part of the pack.

After a few months, the more time they spent together, the more they warmed to each other.

They had a year together.”
