Oscar Madison, The Messy Terrier/Sheepdog Mix Rescue (He Said, Part 5)

“The healing was a slow process but I knew he was over the hump when he could walk up the steps to our brownstone, as well as wanting to take longer walks.

Whenever I thought something was wrong with him during the recovery process, I drove him right back to the Animal Medical Center to see Crystal Sunlight, his surgeon.

She reassured us every step of his recovery.

He’s been well for the last six months, except that he needs to lose 10 pounds.

I pamper him too much, but to me, he’s the best dog.

I am hoping when he gets his summer haircut, it takes a pound off of him.”

“He had three surgeries in one week and even then, he still had an 80% chance of survival as well as keeping his infected leg.

The hardest part was just seeing him so sick, but I had a lot of confidence in the Doctor’s at the Animal Medical Center.

It took Oscar three months to recover.

One week in the hospital and then intensive care at home.

I remember the nurse taking off his collar and leash and his watching that.

I think he thought I was leaving him and it broke my heart.”

“Oscar is like my best friend.

I like the responsibility of caring for him.

I know he likes me and that makes me feel good.

We love walking together and driving in the car.

We like being outside together.

He almost died from some flesh eating bacteria about mine months ago.”

“Mentally, Rosie has added to my life in so many ways– she relaxes me, makes me laugh, forces me to be in the moment more and gets me to enjoy being outside more.

I also socialize more since having Rosie.

My wife and I have met several people that have become friends in the dog community.

I think my wife and I spend more time together relaxing with Rosie and more conversations, in general.

Overall, Rosie has improved my quality of life dramatically.

I am grateful my wife persisted to get a dog.”

“We chose Rosie because of her spots, as well as seeming a bit more independent than the other puppies.

Once they were old enough for adoption, my wife got on a plane and went to Detroit and brought Rosie home to Washington D.C.

It was really difficult when we first got Rosie.

She was still a puppy and took up all of our time.

She needed 24/7 supervision in the beginning, but after two months of development she became less needy and demanding, and more independent and housebroken.

We just lived through it.”

“The breeder had a list of people waiting for a puppy.

For my wife’s birthday I showed her the names on the waitlist, with our name included and she was extremely happy.

We waited for the right litter for us, personally.

The breeder sent us videos of the puppies and we narrowed it down to two puppies.”

“My wife really wanted a dog, and had been asking to get one for three years.

She had been showing me photos and videos of Newfie’s, and already had a breeder in mind.

My main holdout was the time commitment to a dog, but I agreed after three years, basically, because she wore me down.

I also realized that there would never be an ideal time, so now was as any.”

“Rosie is literally the sunshine in our lives.

We have had more strife in our lives in the past 10 months than ever before.

She forces us to be in the moment.

My husband and I are both logical and planners, thinking about the future.

Rosie encourages us to live in the here and now.

That brings us a real experimental joy.

We never know what’s next with Rosie, but we are along for the ride.”

“I made a spread sheet dog friendly apartments on the Upper West Side.

We finally found a prewar building near a subway station, as well as Central Park.

We have only been in NYC for 2 1/2 weeks.

Rosie is doing well as far as adjusting to her new home and city.

The biggest challenge is her wanting to only to the bathroom on grass.”

“Even before the litter was born I spoke with the breeder and we discussed what kind of dog would be a good fit.

The next litter to be born didn’t have a match for us but the following litter did.

I saw videos and photographs of the litter, and Rosie seemed to be the best fit.

I flew to Detroit and brought her home almost two years ago.

Besides having the ordinary pains of puppyhood, we had a difficult time when we moved from Washington D.C. to NYC.

Trying to find an apartment that would take a 95 pound dog along with two cats was not easy.
