Stella, the Peaceful Puppy Hound Rescue From Palmetto Paws That Bonded A Couple (She Said, Part 7)

“Having Stella is something that bonds us together.

As a result of having her, we have more patience with one another and have created a stronger set of communication skills.

Stella has brought out a more nurturing side to my boyfriend and he truly loves her, which in turn adds an element to our relationship.

We spend a lot of time outdoors with Stella, whereas we might have just been indoors, doing our own thing before.

Sometimes when I am watching a beautiful sunset while walking Stella, I think to myself,  if not for her, I might not be seeing this right now.

She has taught us to be more observant of the world around us.”

“Stella can fix her own leash if it gets tangled.

She knows how to spin on command and she can jump and catch a ball on a fly.

When she was very little and we brought her home, I had just started a new job and was gone half the day.

It took a toll on my relationship with my boyfriend, who had never owned a pet before, and wasn’t sure he wanted a dog, let alone a puppy, but was supporting my decision and desire.

All of a sudden he became Stella’s major care giver and it wasn’t a job he was used to.

I changed some things around in my schedule and took on more responsibility.

Over time, Stella won over boyfriend’s heart.”

“After hearing her story, we wanted her mom, but I knew that I wasn’t experienced enough to rescue a dog who has been through trauma because I’ve never owned my own dog.

We chose Stella.

It felt right because she’s my first dog and we are her family.

We’ve had her since August of 2017.

Since having her, some of our best times were when we were establishing a bond with Stella by teaching her commands and tricks.”

“We found out her mom was dumped in a High School Football field and they didn’t know how long she had been there.

A good samaritan called the ACC (Animal Control Center) and got her mom to a rescue group, where they realized she was pregnant.

Luckily, her mom gave birth under the care of a veterinarian with the rescue group and she delivered nine healthy puppies.”

“It was a beautiful day in my life.

I knew I couldn’t leave without taking her with me.

I called my boyfriend to come to the event and meet us.

He came to the event, and we gave puppy back to Palmetto Paws Rescue, where they put her back in her crate while we discussed the reality of owning a dog.

We asked for more information about her background.”

“I saw an adoption event at Petco and thought, I am just going to browse.

Well, that never works.

I showed interest in a few dogs and took each one for a walk, but didn’t really feel a connection with any of them.

Then I saw a little puppy curled up in a ball.

She was the most peaceful one there..

I asked if I could hold her, and right away she smothered me with kisses.

In a sense, I felt she chose me.”

“I grew up in a home where rescuing animals was a regular occurrence.

My Family always rescued older animals that were about to be euthanized.

I’ve always wanted my own dog.

I have a man in my life and we are very committed to one another.

We were able to financially and emotionally support a dog.

I knew I wanted a rescue, because that’s what my family did and it was important to me.”

Olive, the Basset Hound, Staffordshire Terrier, and unknown mix, Rescue Dog (part 6, she said)

“Olive was a perfect match for energy, activity level and temperament.

Our worst experience was when she ate a dark chocolate bar, which is toxic for dogs.

We rushed Olive to the vet, who said, he would do the best he could, but no guarantees.

We told our son, nine at the time, and he responded with big teardrops rolling down his cheeks, but said, every cloud has a silver lining, but I can’t possibly think of what it could be.

Luckily, Olive survived.

She is a member of our family.

When we go away without her, we feel like one of us is missing and the family is not complete.”

“We live on the Upper West Side, and assumed we would take the puppy being fostered near us, but our son, seven at the time, insisted on Olive, who was in Brooklyn.

So, we went to see her at her foster home.

She was listed as part Dachshund, which we weren’t keen on, but our son fell in love with Olive as soon as he met her.

He said, that’s our dog!”

“We brought him to the vet the next morning and he cut the prong collar off of his neck with bolt cutters.

We gave him antibiotics and took him back to our cabin rental, where we weren’t supposed to have dogs.

He slept for the next three days.

While we were still in Tennessee, we saw a flyer for a lost dog with a picture of Smoky.

The vet said, absolutely, do not give him back.”
