“It can be fatal if not treated, or a dog doesn’t respond to steroids.

Zimmy was on steroids for an entire year.

That was seven years ago and he is still here.

I am a divorced middle aged guy and Zimmy has been my best friend.”

“About eight years ago both my sister and veterinarian noticed that Zimmy’s head shape was changing.

Instead of being round it was caved in looking.

We went to a dog neurologist and he was diagnosed with a rare German Shepherd disease, called Muscular Myelitis.

It wears away the muscle mass in the dog’s head.”

“He had crazy looking ears and a great soul.

I got him on June 1st, and I call that summer, my summer of Zimmy, because I was off from work and spent every day with him.

We went to the beach, hiked mountains or had some sort of daily adventure.

When I got him, he was about a year old.

He has been the love of my life for the past nine years.”

“Every time I went in, I visited the dogs, as I had dogs on the brain.

In fact, I had already picked out a name.

I was writing a book at the time and one of the chapters was on Bob Dylan, so I knew I wanted to call the dog, Zimmerman.

The third time there, I passed two huge German Shepherds, and in the same cage was a small Shepherd mix cowering in the corner.

I told the worker that I wanted to see that dog, and within two minutes, he was my dog.”

“I was living in Los Angeles and bought a beautiful old gem of a house that had a doggy door leading to a backyard.

As soon as I saw the doggy door I started thinking it was time to get a dog.

Before I could act on it, a stray cat had a litter of eight kittens in my backyard.

I called the local rescue shelter and they told me people don’t adopt feral kittens, so I should trap them, get them neutered and re-release them into the neighborhood.

As a result, I was going to the shelter once a week, and looking at dogs up for adoption.”

Isabel, One of Two Lab/Whippet Rescue Dogs from Tennessee (part 3, she said)

“One of the worst moments was when she had fleas.  She got tapeworms from biting and swallowing the fleas.

She almost died from the tapeworms.  She was dehydrated, she couldn’t keep food down and the anti-nausea meds weren’t working.

She lost consciousness in my arms and I thought she was going to die.

They injected her with fluids twice and re-injected her with anti-nausea meds and slowly she began to respond to the drugs and recover.”

About a month and a half later he called and said he just got a litter of lab mix puppies.     We saw the photos and decided it was a perfect time to get one for ourselves, too.           We got two sisters.  They get to play together often, living in the same city.

I told her my boyfriend and I were coming to her neighborhood for Bloody Mary’s.   When I got there I asked her to come downstairs and let us in.  She saw her puppy wrapped in a bow and kissed it.  She was overwhelmed with joy and began to cry.  I let her have her moment and then I showed her Isabelle, her puppy’s sister.

It was one of the best moments ever.”

“It’s hard to say definitively the best or worst time since having Smoky, because he has always been there for me.

I feel that any time I’ve had struggles in my life, my dogs have all been there for me.

They give unconditional love.

If you’re having a bad day, they don’t care.

As long as I love on Smoky, the love is always there.

A dog’s love is always there.”

“When we brought him back he was still sick with infection from the prong collar that had been removed from his neck.

We had two other dogs at home back in Florida and weren’t sure if he would join the pack or they would welcome him–but they all got along well, right away.

Smoky took to our black lab and they were best friends for eight years until she died.

After that, Smoky bonded even more with our Malamute Shepherd mix who lived another year and a half.”

“We brought him to the vet the next morning and he cut the prong collar off of his neck with bolt cutters.

We gave him antibiotics and took him back to our cabin rental, where we weren’t supposed to have dogs.

He slept for the next three days.

While we were still in Tennessee, we saw a flyer for a lost dog with a picture of Smoky.

The vet said, absolutely, do not give him back.”
