POPPY, THE SMOOTH COATED BORDER COLLIE RESCUE (PART 4)

IMG_1691

“Poppy had to learn that my husband and I  were the alphas, not her.

We also had to exercise her a lot, because she is a working dog and needs both physical and mental stimulation.

We’ve had her for a year and a half, and some of the best times have been playing frisbee with her.

My husband has been teaching me how to throw a frisbee and it is a great activity that all three of us do together.

We entered her in her first toss and fetch frisbee competition and she did really well.”

“She was very mouthy with me and she bit hard.

That was how she played.

She put her mouth all over my legs and bit too hard.

She had never been taught boundaries.

Most puppies that are mouthy learn to back off from biting hard when someone says, ouch.

Poppy didn’t understand that.

It was obvious she had never been touched or received attention.”

“I lost my last dog four days before I got Poppy.

He died at twelve from old age.

I went to Columbia Greene Humane Society in Hudson, New York.

I was hoping to find a border collie mix, and there she was, amongst all the pit bulls up for adoption.

She was just what I was looking for; a female under the age of two years.”

BUDDY & OZZIE, The Rescue Beagle and Hound Dogs That Keep Each Other Company (PART 2)

“There was an event at the Petco near my apartment and Buddy was the first and only dog I met.

I felt like I could relate to him.

He seemed happy and content, like a chill little guy.  There was another woman interested but she seemed weird.

They asked me if I wanted to take him for a walk and I walked him home to my apartment.  He sniffed around, hopped on the couch and seemed at home.

I went out of the room and he followed me.  He’s always by my feet.  He’s my little shadow.

Having Buddy helped me get over a bad relationship quickly.

I feel like I am pretty fortunate, and giving Buddy a good life means a lot to me.  I know that he feels safe and loved.”

“My boyfriend was living with me and he was really against getting a dog.  He thought it was too much work.

It was something I wanted for a long time.

After he moved out, I started looking for a dog.

I got Buddy the day after my 30th birthday.  He was my birthday present to myself.

“I found his picture through a rescue group in Tennessee called Moonshine Dog Rescue.

If you committed to buying one of their dogs, they promised transporting the dog up east.

Once I committed to adopting Jack, another rescue group called Alpha dog Transport brought him from the scout, it a tractor trailer full of dogs from different rescue groups to a designated are off route 80 in New Jersey.”

“I just really wanted to take care of a living creature, and I also wanted a sidekick.

I was just coming out of a breakup and I went on Petfinder to find a rescue dog.

I typed in Shepherd mix; male or female.

I knew I wanted a medium size dog, I didn’t care about the breed or sex.”

OTTO, THE STRONG WILLED MINIATURE LONG HAIRED DACHSHUND (SHE SAID, PART 4)

“The hardest thing about having him has been the potty training.

The fifth time at night wiping dog pee off the floor can be frustrating.

Dachshunds can be very strong willed, but we knew this going into it.

He also has a passion for shoes,  the recycling bin and unrolling the toilet paper– the length of the whole apartment.”

We wanted to know that with our work schedules that we could hire a dog walker and get him enough exercise.

There are always reasons not to, but in the end we decided to go for it.

Our hearts trumped our rational thought.

We always liked Dachshunds.

We joked about having one because they are funny and sweet.

I did a lot of research, as to avoid a puppy mill.”

“I didn’t question why to get a dog, I wondered what was stopping me from getting a dog.

My fiancé and I are from the U.K. and we wondered what would happen if we went back with a dog.

Luckily there is no more quarantine, if you get your dog the right vaccinations.

Also, I thought about living in a small space, and giving our dog a good quality of life.
