TUCKER, THE FRENCH BULLDOG THAT CHOSE HIS FAMILY (PART 3)

FullSizeRender-78

“I called him and after much arguing the owner of the Pit Bull finally paid half the bill.

It wasn’t really about the money, but about taking responsibility.

I would never want any dog owner to suffer the way we did.

I don’t know if I can think of a happiest moment, because there are so many.

When Tucker saw snow for the first time he ran around in circles,  buried his nose and  was in ecstasy.

He also loves the beach;  he loves to bury his face in the sand.”

TWIGGY, THE ITALIAN GREYHOUND/CHIHUAHUA MIX RESCUE (PART 2)

“My partner and I both craned our necks because she was so beautiful.

We assumed that she was one of the patients at the hospital, as opposed to one of the dogs up for adoption.

At the interview I was wearing a rainbow button, because the Supreme Court had just legalized gay marriage the day before.

The interviewer said, I see your button and I am so excited, I’ve been with my partner for 43 years.

We told her we were looking for a short haired, small female.

We thought she would bring out a chihuahua.”

“One the biggest joys I have is watching Ike run.  He flies through the air.

He is always happy and a pleasure to watch.

I remembered the joys of having a dog.

I think in general, no matter what the level of personal trauma, dogs are there for you.

They give unconditional love, no matter what.”

“My wife and daughter promised to do all the walking, and my wife took care of the adoption process.

My wife and daughter have made a real effort with the walking, but I do my share.

I would say I do one third of the walks.

I saw very quickly, that Ike is a great dog.

He is different from my last dog, but great in his own ways.”

L.T, THE RESCUE HOUND, TERRIER AND GOLDEN RETRIEVER MIX (PART 2)

“He was there with his sister, but she was already spoken for.

We spent close to four hours with him–my entire family sat with him to make sure it was going to work.

He was gentle with my granddaughter and he got along with my daughter’s dog, so we adopted him.

After five months we got an email from Paws Crossed asking if we would be interested in setting up a play date with L.T. and his sister.

We were happy to have the sibling puppies socialize together.

We met at a dog park in Westchester and they got along beautifully.

They looked identical, and after ten minutes they were inseparable.”

“L.T. is short for Logan Taylor.  There is another Logan in my apartment building, so I started calling him, L.T.

I was recently out of work, or semi-retired and I now have the time to devote to a puppy.

My family and I went to a rescue shelter in Westchester, called Paws Crossed.

My daughter and I found L.T.

He is a hound, terrier and golden mix.

We chose him because of his personality.

He was mellow.  He was four and a half months old and he was so serene.”

Nikki and Winston, the Pit Bull and Shiba-Enu Rescues (She Said, Part 5)

“It’s a big decision.

Also, Winston was dying of pneumonia when we got him.  The vet said he was 2 days away from death.

I still recommend adopting before shopping, but I learned a lot about puppy mills, pet stores and when you meet a dog that is meant to be yours, it doesn’t matter where it comes from.”

“We knew nothing about Winston’s breed (Shiba Inu) but the moment I made eye contact with him it was unlike anything I’ve ever experienced before.  I can’t find the words to describe the feelings, except that I felt like I’d met a soulmate.

Getting Winston from a pet store also shifted my point of view about dog buying.

Prior to Winston, I had been staunchly anti-buying from a pet shop, but I realized that once a dog leaves a puppy mill it still needs a home.”

We were living in a temporary apartment while we were looking for a new place.  Getting another dog was not on the table because we already had one, but one day when we were picking up her food at this pet store, I made eye contact with this puppy and I ended up leaving the store with him in my arms.

We weren’t planning on buying another dog for a myriad of reasons.

We already had a dog, we were living in a temporary space and we don’t support puppy mills.  Also, we hadn’t been together long.”

“My boyfriend had Nikki, a terrier mix, before we met.

Shortly after we started dating he got a job and was working long hours, so I was at home with Nikki most of the time.  I started taking her with me wherever I went.   I felt bad that she would have been home alone a lot.

I had never had a dog of my own and I fell in love with her.”
