“She slowed down about five years due to problems with her back legs, but she is still active at almost 18.

When she started to go blind in her right eye, it was devastating to me because it was an unexplained change in her vision.

I spent thousands of dollars  trying to recover her vision.

I cried to the veterinarian, because I want Shy to have the best life possible.

He said, she’s happy, look at her.

She was wagging her tail and smiling.

Shy just wanted to leave the animal hospital and go out on a walk.

I decided to be happy that she is happy.

She may be shy one eye, but she is still Shy, and she’s happy.”

LILY, THE BLACK LABRADOR WHO WAS MEANT TO BE A HUNTING DOG (PART 5)

“It’s everything from the mundaneness of scheduling things, to the whole idea of having something you are responsible for.

I also love how much she gives back to me in regards to companionship and laughs.

Lily has a great sense of humor, and makes me laugh regularly.

She loves to roll around on the ground while seemingly smiling, and likes to steal things like socks, shoes and a loofa sponge.

She never destroys things, she just likes the game of taking them and having us chase her.

Coming home after work is pure joy because she is so happy and we like seeing each other.”

“I have made friends through my walks with Lily that are now part of my social life.

Lily was there when I met my current wife and was so jealous of her that she used to eat her undergarments.

It took about six months for Lily to come around, but now they are best friends.

Lily gets upset when my wife is not around, and waits in the hallway for her to come home.

Lily has changed how I live my life.”

“When I first got Lily, I was going through a divorce and she was a constant source of joy and playfulness, which was wonderful.

She required a lot of attention, which was a great diversion from the divorce.

She was great about getting me a whole new social network and seeing parts of the city I had never been to before having her.”

“I told him I would take her hunting.

Of course I had never been hunting before.

Cut to six months later, my father and I had our Elmer Fudd hats on, following Lily around with hunting guns.

That day, the birds and other animals were safe, that’s for sure.

Several years later, I can now say, Lily is a good hunter.”

“We’ve always had a dog in our house and I realized I am not as happy without a dog as I am with one.

I had a friend who was always raving about his dog and I asked him who his breeder was.

Lily’s breeder is a hunting breeder.

The breeder gave me a big lecture about how she wouldn’t be happy if she wasn’t hunting.”

“We lived in San Diego, Los Angeles, Maui, Boston, and Tampa.

I was an Emergency Room nurse for eight years and a Burn ICU for 2 years.

Coming home to Shy was great because she was always excited to see me.

After a rough day, I could come home and cuddle her.

She is a great comfort.”

“The first year I had her she had a lot of issues.

She chewed a lot of things, she was afraid and would shake sometimes, but I took her running with me and it gave her a purpose.

Shy became my running partner for 12 years.

I was a traveling nurse for four years and took Shy with me to all of my assignments.”

“I felt like she had given up.

The shelter people told me they found her in the street and she was afraid of everything.

They tried to dissuade me from adopting her.

She was days away from being euthanized.

This shelter put their animals down after only three days.

It was a high kill shelter with little resources.

I put a deposit on her so they wouldn’t put her down and told my boyfriend, who I lived with at the time, I wouldn’t take her back no matter how many problems she had.”

“He said, adopt her.

I did.

I called her Shy, because she was so scared, and designated Valentine’s Day as her birthday.

The veterinarian told me she must be six months old when I got her.

That made her birthday sometime in February.

I made it Valentine’s Day because she was the sweetest gift I’ve ever received.
