Barcley, the Irish Terrier that keeps life light and appreciates the little things (part 1)

“I met a therapy dog at the Meet the Breeds Dog Show at the Javits Center, and she was an Irish Terrier.

She was so lovely and different from other dogs I had seen.

The Irish Terriers have a bit of a different look.

They have a beard, are scruffy, yet elegant and a perfect size.

I started doing a lot of research online.

The breed club has a matchmaker.

She spoke with me on the phone and made a match.”

“I walk her more now because I am out of school.

I knew having a dog was going to be a lot of work, responsibility and fun.

It has been exciting because I see a new side to Silka every day.

I am watching her shed her puppy ways and grow into an adult dog.

It’s hard to put into words why I love her so much, but I feel very connected to her.”

“We adopted Silka and brought her home that day.

That was three months ago.

The only hard part since getting Silka has been her teething phase, which she is still going through.

She used to bite us and was hard for her to stop.

She would start and go wild and continue for a good ten to fifteen minutes in that crazy chomping mode.

This was before she had all her shots and she couldn’t go to he dog park or socialize with other dogs, yet.”

“It was love at first sight from the photograph.

We drove up to the shelter the next day to meet her.

We were offered a room where people meet and play with potential puppies and dogs to adopt.

When we first met her and her siblings, they all jumped at us.

We were torn between Silka and one other, but my mother suggested we go with our first instinct and the reason we were there in the first place.”

“”I’ve always wanted a dog and finally my parents said, we are going to get a dog.

I am 15 and I live at home.

My family adopted her from the Westchester Humane Society.

We were looking at dogs on their website and a photo of Silka popped up.

The angle of the photo made her look slender and very unique.

We had a picture in our minds of what we wanted our dog to look like and she fit the bill.”

Babka, the Jack Russell/Rat Terrier, Chihuahua Rescue Mix (part 5)

“The first time I noticed how much of an impact Babka had on my life was during a snowstorm a few weeks after getting her.

We usually just stayed inside, but she needed to be walked and I took her out.

Just getting out of the house and walking in the fresh snow felt calming.

I was appreciative that another living body needed me and got me out of the house.  My routine had changed and I liked it.

My relationship with my husband has grown– we are on a team with a common goal; taking care of Babka.

Having Babka makes us feel more like a family, not just a couple.”

“After taking her to the vet because she had a skin issue–mange, we were told we needed to put her on a diet and give her a lot of exercise to slim her down.

We walked her five miles a day.

It worked and she lost a lot of weight after only two months.

She also had a growth spurt and that took care of the rest of the unwanted fat.”

“We filled out the paperwork and took her home.

We were absolutely terrified that first day.

For me, the responsibility seemed overwhelming.

My husband was scared as well.

The first night we got her, she slipped out of her harness and ran down the sidewalk.

She was fat at the time so he caught up with her quickly, but had to turn her on her side to stop her from running again.”

“I was bitten when I was a child and I was a little nervous around dogs in general.

The counselors at Bide-a-Wee recommended that we meet Babka, (called Pretty Girl, at the time), even though she was just six months old.

Her tail wagged the whole time we spent together and she leapt from my lap to my husband’s lap.

His cats used to do that, so he took this as a sign that she was meant to be ours.”

“My husband always wanted a cat and I am allergic, so we agreed to get a dog.

I was not an animal person, before Babka.

We had just started looking and went to Bide-A-Wee Rescue.

Initially, we wanted a one year old dog.

We thought an older dog, (older than a puppy), would be easier for first time dog owners.

The other thing is I was afraid of a nipping puppy.”
